DIE FOR STAMPING CIGARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,226, dated June 18, 1895.

T0 at whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMOND NAROISSE CUSSON, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the city of Montreal, in the district of lllontrealand Province of Quebec, Oanada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Stamping Cigars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has reference to a die composed of a copper tail piece surmounted by a steel die, having raised letters composed of intermittent lines. The object of making a die in this way is that a die made totally out of copper has the efiect of retaining the carbonized nicotine of the Wrapper on the surface of the letters and renders the same too cold then to push any further the operations, the carbonized material thus deposited being non conductor of heat. The letters of the die thus becoming clogged have to be cleaned very often and this means lost time and extra labor. On the other hand the copper being more soft than steel it has the disadvantage of requiring a great deal of repairs this being not the case with the steel letters, and an all steel die not being as good a conductor of heat as the copper, takes a large amount of heat to keep it hot enough to singe letters on the cigar wrapper, although the letters never get clogged. Consequently in adopting a copper tail piece, surmounted by a steel die, I have the benefit of the good conductivity of heat of the copper tail piece and the nonclogging letters of a steel die, the copper tail piece keeping the die always very hot.

Referring to the drawings, similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Fig. 3, a plan view, and Fig. 1, an enlarged plan view, showing a letter, (the letter TR) A is my die composed of a copper tail piece B, surmounted by the steel cap O, inserted into the tail piece B as shown at D and secured to it by means of the rivets E, the cap or die proper 0 having on its upper surface the raised letters F, composed of intermittent lines, that is, forming dotted letters, the dots being either rectangular, triangular, round, square or in fact of any shape, such for instance as the square projections G shown on Fig. 4 and forming the letter T.

The object of having the letters dotted is that when the wrappers of the cigars are very thin and have no body the letters having continuous lines on the stamping dies do not leave a permanent impression, while when the letters are dotted, the projections G embed themselves in the cigar wrapper, and thus leave a permanent impression.

All dies for stamping cigars have at present a fiat surface, and as cigars are round it sometimes happens that these flat dies do not work satisfactorily, therefore make the raised letters slightly concave, so as to always insure a perfect contact.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

A die for stamping'cigars composed of a copper tail piece B, surmounted by a steel die 0 having raised dotted concave letters G, and secured to tail piece B by means of rivets E, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
