/// l I I eg j' UNITED STATES JAMES THOMAS BAKER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NIKON, TENNESSEE.`
COMBINED SASH HOI- DER AND FASTAENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,892, dated .Tune 11, 1895.
v Application filed January 30, 1895. Serial No. 536,689. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES THOMAS BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nixon, in the county of Hardin and State of Tennessee, have invented a vnew and useful Window, of which the following is a specification'.
The invention relates to improvements in windows. l y
.The object of the present invention is to irnprove the construction of windows, and the manner of mounting the sashes, to prevent sashes from sticking and binding.
A further object of the invention is to enable the sashes of a window to be readily raised. and lowered, and to be secured at any desired adjustment.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the draWings,Figure 1 is anielevation of a Window provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a verticalsectional view of one side of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional -view of one of the casiugs, illustrating the construe tion of the locking device and the yieldinglymounted rollers. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of aportion of the window-strip.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a window-frame provided at each side for each sash with a vertical strip 2, constructed of suitable material, preferably metal, and provided with a longitudinal groove 3 and having therein a vertical rib 4, formingatrack or way for yieldingly-mounted rollers or, Wheels 5, carried by the sashes 6. Each strip 2 is provided at its side edges with longitudinal anges, and has at its top an integral pulley-casing 7, receiving a pulley 8 for a sash-cord, which is connected with the sash in the usualmanner.` Each sash is provided, near the top and bottom of each side, with a rectangular casing 9, mounted in the recess of the sash and provided with a removable outer plate 10, having lugs for the`reception of screws,'whereby the ca sing is detachably secured to the sash.- The casing is provided withV a narrow longitudinal Way ll, receivingr a spring-actuated bolt l2, provided at its outer end with a projecting point for engaging any one of a series of perforations 13 of the strip 2. The spring-actuated bolt is provided with an L-shaped shank on which is disposed a spiral spring 14, and the arm 15 of the shank projects through a slot 16, and forms a handle for manipulating the bolt. The spring engages a shoulder ofthe casing at its inner end, and the enlargement of the bolt at its outer end. The Slot 16 is L-shaped, and forms a shoulder at its inner end adapted to be engaged by the arm of the shank of the bolt, and when it is desired to hold the projecting point of the bolt out of engagement with the perforations of the strip the arm of the shank is engaged with the shoulder of the L-shaped slot.
Within the casing, adjacent to the bolt, is a sliding block or frame 17, provided at its outer portion with abifurcation receiving the roller or wheel 5. This block or frame is provided at'its inner portion with a rectangular opening 1S, in which is located a spring 19, consisting of a series of transverse portions and connecting bends, and engaged 'by an adjustable screw 2'0, to regulate its tension. The screw is mounted in a threaded perforation Vof the inner end ofthe casing and has its inner end'located in an enlarged perforation 2l of the inner end of the sliding block or frame 17, and adapted to engage the spring, whereby the roller or Wheel is yieldingly forced ont-- Ward, and is adapted to conform automatically to any inequality of the Window-frame, and to counteract any swelling or shrinking, whereby the sashes are caused to move freely in the window-frame.
The Wheel or roller 5 is provided with aV- shaped groove to receive the rib 4, which is triangular in cross-section.
It will be apparent that the improvements are simple and inexpensive, that they are adapted to be readily applied to windows in use, and that they are capable of enabling sashes to run freely, and that sashes may be securely locked at any desired adjustment.
The screws may be moved inward and outward to take up any looseness of the sashes, and the springs are adapted to expand and IOO contract to accommodate the sash to the windowframe, and the slidingblock or frame is provided with a projection 22, extending through a slot 23, of the casing and providing a handle for operating the sliding block or frame.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to'without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
That I claim isl. The combination with a window-frame, of a strip mounted thereon and provided with longitudinal flanges, and having between the same a vertical rib forming atrack or way, said strip being provided at intervals with perforations, a sash, a casing mounted on the sash, a spring-actuated bolt carried by the casing and arranged to engage the perforations, a 4yieldingly-inounted roller arranged in the casing and provided with a groove to receive said rib, and means for adjusting the roller, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a window-frame having a track, a sash, a sliding block or frame mounted on the sash in suitable horizontal ways, and capable of a limited horizontal movement, and provided with an opening and carrying a roller for engaging the track, a spring arranged within the opening of the sliding block or frame, and bearing against the sliding block or frame at the front or outer end of the opening for forcing the roller in engagement with the track, and a. screw capable of adjustment and forminga bearing for the inner end of the spring, whereby the tension of the same may be regulated, substantially as described.
3. The combinationof awindow-framehaving a track, a sash, a casing mounted on the sash and provided at its inner end' with a threaded perforation, a sliding block or frame `provided at ,its inner end with a perforation and having an opening, a roller mounted on the block or frame and arranged to run on the track, a spring located in the opening of the block or frame, and a screw mounted in the threaded perforation of the casing and passing th roughthe perforation of the sliding block or frame and engaging the spring, substantially as described. v
4. The combination of a window-frame, a strip arranged vertically thereon and provided with longitudinal flanges and havinga vertical rib triangular in cross-section located between the flanges, a sash, a casing mounted on the sash, a sliding block or frame having a bifurcated outer portion and adapted to fit between the flanges of the strip, a roller mounted in the bifurcation of the sliding block or frame and havingaV-shaped groove to engage the rib, a spring for forcing the sliding block or frame outward, and a screw for adjusting the tension of the spring, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aii'ixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
