JOHN THOMPSON, OF HAMPTON, VIRGINIA.
FRAME FOR SUPPORTING GROWING PLANTS.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,804, dated June 11, 1895.
pp n l December 24, 1894. Serial No. 532,902- (No model.)
To QQZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN THoMPsoN,acitizen of the United States, residing at Hampton, in the county of Elizabeth City and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Frame for Supporting Growing Plants, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto the'manner of connecting together the different parts of such frames so as to afford the greatest strength,
and at the same time secure the free admis Near the upper end of each of these a-hole is bored, and a round-headed nail of suitable size is inserted to the head, and bent to a right angle at a proper distance from it; by which means I form a rotating clasp G, that will not get out of order nor be lost. The stakes A are joined together in pairs by laying them at the desired distance apart, with the clasps G turned outward, and theirlower ends convergingat the required angle. this position each pair is secured by nailing across the stakes a bar 0, long enough to project a little at each side. This bar must be placed rather more than half its own width below the clasps G, so that the bars D hereinafter mentioned may be properly held between its projecting ends, and the aforesaid clasps. The two. stakes A are further connected by the diagonal braces E, which are nailed at their lower ends to the stakes high enough up to allow the points of the stakes to be afterward driven into the ground. At
kerfs I-I engaged with clasp's G,
their upper ends, braces E are fastened to the bar 0 at some distance from its junction with D is connected by a pivot at the height of brace E, but on the same side with clasp G. Two pairs of stakes so united are required for one of my frames. For each frame I also pro vide two bars B, each of which has a kerf H on its upper edge near each end, and is also provided at equal distances from its ends with staples I, wide enough to receive braces D.
When the frames are to be set up for use, bars B are secured to stakes A and braces F, as seen in Fig. 1, a pin or bolt K, being used to unite the braces F at their intersection. These frames as will be obvious, are very strong when thus put together; yet they may be readily taken down, and packed closely for storageor transportation. 7,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A plant support consisting of four stakes permanently secured together in pairs, and provided with the rotating clasps G; the sections thus formed being connected together by pivoted diagonal braces D, and bars B, provided with staples I, receiving braces D, and all substan tially as shown.
2. The herein described plant support, consisting of the four stakes A each provided with a clasp G, the cross-bars O, and diagonal braces E, permanently secured to stakes A; the pivoted braces D, and the removable bars B provided with staples I and kerfs H, all combined and arranged substantially as shown.
JOHN THOMPSON.
