UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WATSON, or MARrNETTn/wIscoNsIN.
TICKET R CARD CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,706, dated J une 11, 1895. Application filed November 14, .1894. Serial No. 528 ,794. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Ticket or Card Case, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to a ticket or card case adapted vfor holding car tickets, visiting cards, and similar articles, and the objects in view are to provide a simple, inexpensive and efticient device for containing a number of cards; to provide means whereby the tickets or cards may be expelled separately; to provide means whereby the case maybe filled with facility and whereby the case may be opened without allowing the accidental displacement of its contents; and furthermore, to provide means whereby the feeding spring for the tickets or cards is adapted to act .upon the lid of the case to open the latter when released by the catch. I o
Further objects and advantages of my in- Vention will appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a ticket or card case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longltudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View, in perspective, of the expelling or discharging slide. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the lid thrown back by the upward pressure of the follower communicated through the front extremities of the cards contained by the casing. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section of the front end of the casing to show the means for guiding the followerplate. .Y
Similar numerals of referenceindicate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawlngs.
1 designates the case provided with a hinged lid or cover 2, the same being hinged to a transverse stop 3 which forms a part o f the top of the case andwhich is spaced from the upper edge of the contiguous end of the case to form an outlet slot or opening 4. The lid or cover is flanged upon its sides and its free end to fit against the corresponding walls of the case and the end flange of the lid or cover is provided with a perforation 6 for the recep tion of a stud 7 on' the catch 8, said catch bea ing provided with a button 9.
Arranged within the case is a follower-plate 10 provided with a spiral actuating spring 11 whereby the tickets 12 are pressed upward, one end of the uppermost ticket being in contact with the above described transverse stop plate. This stop-plate limits the' upward movement of the tickets at one end, whereby in filling the case the tickets may be inserted under said stop plate and are held from displacement by the follower. The case is also provided at the end adjacent to the catch or the free terminal of the lid or cover with a stop iiange 13, and flush with the inner edge of this Iiange is a guide strip 1li, whereby the tickets or cards are prevented from being engaged under the ange. The follower-plate,
however, is notched to span this guard strip It will be seen from the abovadescription that while the tickets or cards are held from yupward movement at one end by the transverse stop-plate, they are unrestrained at the other end, or the end adjacent to the free terminal of the lid or cover, and hence when said lid or cover is released by the repression of the button connected withthe catch, said lid or cover is thrown back promptly by the ac tion of the springs located under the followerf plate to expose the contents of the case.
The lid or cover is provided at its center with a longitudinal slot 15 in which operates the shank 16 attached to a discharge slide 17, said slide consisting of a plate provided with teeth or spurs 18 adapted to engage the upper surface of the uppermost ticket or card. The shank of the discharge slide terminates above the plane of the top vor cover in a button 19, and the lower surface of the button is arranged at an acute angle with the plane of the plate, whereby the slide may be drawn back with its spurs or teeth out of engagement with the uppermost ticket or card, but when the button is pressed forward said spurs or teeth are pressed downward to firmly engage the uppermost ticket or card, whereby the positive discharge of the latter is attained. The top or cover adjacent to the said slot therein is provided upon its inner surface with a channel in which the spurred or toothed plate may operate without engagement with the uppermost ticket or card, and the follower-plate is grooved in alignment with the spurs or teeth on the plate, whereby when the case is empty and the follower plate is in Contact with the stop plate and stop fiange at the upper edge of the ease, the discharge slide may be operated without causing contact of its 4spurs or teeth with the follower plate.
It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle .or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A ticket or card case provided with a hinged lid or cover and means for securing the free end thereof, a stop spanning the case at one end to limit the upward movement of the contained tickets or cards at said end, to
hold the uppermost ticket in alignment with a discharge opening in the casing a vertically movable follower plate arranged in the case to support the tickets or cards a spiral actuating spring arranged centrally under the follower and means for discharging the tickets or cards separately, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a case provided at one end with a transverse stop plate and an adjacent discharge opening, a lid or cover hinged to said stop plate, a catch for securing the free end of the lid or cover, a spring actuated followerplate for elevating the tickets or cards and adapted when the free end of the lid or cover is released to act through the tickets or cards to throw the lid or cover back, and means for discharging the tickets or cards separately, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a casing provided at one end with a stop plate and a contiguous discharge opening and at the other end with a stop flange, a spring actuated follower-plate arranged in the casing and adapted to be checked in its upward movement by said stop plate and flange, a guide strip arranged flush with the inner edge of said stop flange to pre vent tickets or cards arranged in the case from engaging under the ange, alid or cover hinged adjacent to the stop plate, a catch for engaging the free end of the lid or cover, said catch being arranged contiguous to said stop flange, and means for discharging the tickets or cards separately, substantially as specified.
Il. The combination with a case having a discharge slot, and a spring actuated follower arranged therein and adapted to holdthe uppermost ticket or card in alignment with said discharge slot, of a discharge slide having a spurred or toothed plate arranged within the case, a shank operating in a slot in the case, and a knob carried by the shank, the inner side of said knob being angularly disposed with relation to the plane of said spurred plate, whereby in advancing the slide the spurred end of the plate isY depressed, suhstantially as specified.
5. The combination with a case having an outlet slot, and a spring actuated followerplate arranged therein, of a lid or cover provided with a slot and a contiguous groove or channel, and a discharge slide having a spurred plate arranged in said groove or channel of the lid or cover, a shank operating in the said slot and abutton attached to the outer end of the shank and adapted to be moved angularly to depress the spurred end of the plate, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a ticket or card case having an outlet slot or opening, and means for feeding the contents to hold one of the tickets or cardsin alignment with the outlet slot or opening, of a device for engaging the ticket or card which is in alignment with the outlet slot or opening, said device having a spurred or toothed plate slidably mounted upon the case and capable of a rocking movement to cause the depression of the spurred or toothed end thereof, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atlixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES WATSON.
