Description

(No Model.) A. F. BURTT.
UATGHBRS MITT. No. 540,631. Patented Junell, 1895.
\g -mcsszs: INVENTEIR; m /tkmfzwy UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
ALBERT F. BURTT, OF AsHLAND, NEw HAMPSHIRE, AssIeNoRTo DRAPER & MAYNARD, OF SAME PLACE.
CATCHERS MITT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,631, dated June 11, 1 895. Application filed November 2, 1894. fierial No. 527,695. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. BURTT, of Ashland, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catchers Gloves and Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvementin'catchers gloves and mittens and has for its object to so construct the heel of the glove or mitten that it can be readily opened or closed to enable the player to change the pad without injury to the outside of the glove or mitten. The closing devices will be so positioned as to be out of contact of the wrist of the player.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the characters marked thereon, which form part of this specification, like characters designating like parts or features, as the case maybe, wherever they occur.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a catchers glove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of part of the end flaps, showing the lacing-cords in position.
The glove A, the pocket 00 for the hand of the catcher, and the attachment 9, are of the usual form and construction. The wrist or butt of the glove is provided with an opening closed by two flaps a. a secured tothe front and back side respectively of the glove. These flaps are provided with holes 0. arranged to register with each other when the flaps are in closed position. These flaps are substantially equal to the thickness of the glove, and lie, when in closed position, side by side, with the flap a inside the flap 0,. To secure these fiaps'toge'ther and thus close the opening in the end of the glove or mitten, a lacing cord 1) is run back and forth through the holes a as shown in Fig. 3, and secured at its ends by a knot, or in any desired way.
Attention is especially called to the construction and arrangement of the flaps and their accessories, the lacing holes a and the manner in which the lacing cord is placed in said holes. It will be observed that the flaps are integral; that the holes are at a substantial distance from the edge of the flaps, and that the flaps are each substantially as wide as the thickness of the glove, thus causing them to lap by each other when the opening in the gloveis closed. Attention is'also called to the manner in which the cord is passed or run in and out through the flaps, instead of being passed over and over, in'the form of an overcast stitch, which would happen were one of these flapssewed to the edge of the glove. The arrangement of the flaps makes it possible to' completely close the end of the glove or mitten and prevent any padding from working out, while the location of the holes and the manner in which the lacing cord is of necessity placed therein prevents the cord from comingin contact with the wrist of the wearer, which would happen were the cord arranged in the form of a spiral around the edge of the glove, which would take place were one edge of the fiap secured to the edge of the glove, as above stated.
- Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A catchers glove or mitt comprising a glove, the parts of which are permanently secured together, an opening in the butt or wrist end of said glove, over-lapping flaps a and a, secured to the front and back edges respectively of. said glove, at each side of said opening, and 'having a width approximately equal to the distance between said edges, said flaps being provided with holes near the rear side of the mitt, arranged to register with one another, and a lacing cord run .through and through said flaps in said holes whereby said opening may be securely and completely closed, and the lacing cord placed out of contact with the wrist of the wearer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 30th day of October, A. D. 1894.
ALBERT F. BURTT.
