Description

(No Model.)
J. WHARFE.
' I 77 fizzeiff w m A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WHARFE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,474, dated June 4, 1895. Applica i n fil December 26,1894. Serial No. 533.036. (No model.) Patented in England September 2'7, 1894,No.18,334i
To all whom it may concern.-
* Be it known that I, JOSEPH WHARFE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Wimbledon, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Window-Fasteners, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 18,334, dated September 27, 1894,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to window fasteners and consists in providing a window fastener having a jointed bolt one end of which engages in apertures in one sash and the other end is secured by a stop fixed to the window frame.
In order that my invention may be fully understood I now refer to the annexed drawings,
in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section.
a is the bolt which is formed in two parts pivoted at b and slides in a socket j formed on the piece 0 which is secured to the lower sash rail 01 of the window.
e is a small stop piece which is secured by screws or the like to the side of the window framef.
g is a small plate which is attached to the upper sash h of the window.
2' is a small pin or detent which enters a recess in the bolt a and retains the same in its locked position.
When it is desired to release the window the pin 1' is withdrawn from the recess in the bolt a, and the end of the same is withdrawn from the plate 9, by means of the knob or handle it, which is then turned on the pivot b into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. One or more plates g may be employed so that the top sash h of the window may be opened for ventilation or other purposes and locked in the desired position.
g It will be seen that the stop piece 6 prevents the lower sash d from being lifted or raised when the bolt a is in its locked position.
m is a pin which is attached to the bolt (1 and engages in a slot or aperture in the socket j so as to regulate the amount of movement of same. So long as the bolt a is in its locked position it cannot be turned owing to the joint or pivot 19 being in the socketj.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a window fastener, the combination of a hinged or jointed bolt; a socket piece for attaching same to window sash and in which said bolt slides; a pin attached to said bolt and sliding in a slot cut in said socket; an aperture in said bolt, a pin or looking piece upon said socket which falls into the said aperture in bolt and locks same when bolt is shot, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of November, 1894.
JOSEPH WHARFE.
