Description

(No'ModeL) G. C. TWYMAN. INSECT EXTERMINATOR.
No. 540,343. Patented June 4, 1895. v
6700 C Twymwz.
GOODLOE O. TWYMAN, 'OFBOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY.
INSECTFEXTERMINATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,343, dated June 4, 1895. 7 Application iiled February 20, 1895- Serial No. 539,134:- (No model.)
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GooDLoE O. TWYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing atBowling Green, in the county of Warren and State. of Kentucky, have invented certain new and, useful Improvements in a Combined Insect- Exterminator, Glue-Pot, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andj exact description of the invention, such as will: enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in insect exterminators; and has particular reference to certain new and useful improvements upon that construction of externpinator illustrated, described and claimed inzUnited States Patent, dated February 12, 1895, and granted jointly to myself and one M. E. Thomas.
The objects of my invention are to improve upon the construction designated in said patent, and to thereby adapt the device not only to perform the functions therein set forth, but also to serve as a domestic-cooker, and with the addition of a glue-pot, to serve as a gluepot heater.
Various other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims,
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial sectional view of my improved device, the same being shown as adapted for heating glue. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device, the upper portion or boiler being removed and the same adapted to serve as a cooker.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both figures of the drawings.
The oil-tank 1, is preferably made cylindrical, and provided at its center with a threaded opening 2, in which is removably fitted a burner-tube 3, designed to receive a wick. The tube may be removed for the purpose of fill.- ing the oil-tank 1.
Extending vertically from the upper edge of the tank 1 and surrounding a portion of the same is asemi-circular sheet-metal guard 4, whose upper edge is beaded over a portion of a stout wire-ring 5, that completes the circle of which the aforesaid guard is a portion. As shown by dotted lines in both figures of thedrawings, the opposite sides of the guard may be provided with bail-ears 6, in which may be connected the hook-ends of an ordinaryswinging-bail 7, by which the device may be conveniently carried.
Above the oil-tank 1 and having its bottom loosely inclosed by the ring and upper end of the guard 4, is a cylindrical boiler 8, the same having at its upperend a large opening 9, surrounded by a vertical threaded flange 10, upon which is removably arranged a threaded coverv or cap 11. The cap or cover 11 has a flanged orifice 12, in which is fitted a cork or other stopper 13, the same acting as a safety-valve to the boiler. A tapered spout 14, leads from an opening in the wall of the boiler, the same terminating in a reduced orifice, which may or may not be provided with the soft rubber tube 15, that may be of any length. By employing the tube 15 steam may be carried to and introduced in small crevices difficult of access with merely the spout 14, while the device is situated upon the floor or some other convenient place. At a diametrically opposite point at which the spout is located there is arranged an inverted L-shaped tubular handle-section 16, the same telescopically fitting into the upper end of a similar though reversely disposed handle-section 17, that-extends from the oiltank 1. It will be seen that the two handle-sections are adjustable one upon the other, and that by withdrawing the upper section so that the boiler will clear the ring, the upper portion of the device may be swung from over the lower portion. The
telescopic limit of the two handle sections may i be regulated by a drop of solder 18, which serves as a stop.
The cap 11 being in position upon the boiler and the latter filled with Water or other liquid, it will be apparent that steam may be rapidly and readily generated which may with deadly effect be discharged against all kinds of vermin and insects. In fact steam may be thus employed for numberless purposes, such for instance, as cleaning. painted wood work, fumigating mattresses, bed-clothes, apparel, dad; also applying to the anatomy of persons for relieving pain, such as toothache, earache, pneumonia, swellings, bruises, &c.
By removing the upper portion of the device from the lower portion, the device is converted into a handy domestic-cooker, and as shown in Fig. 2, it will accommodate a fryingpan 19, an oven, boiler, &c.
When the boiler 8 is in position by simply removing the cap or cover 11, the said boiler is adapted to receive a glue or other pot 20. (See Fig. 1.)
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that I have greatly improved upon the original construction as illustrated in the patent heretofore mentioned, and by such improvements have widened the field of utility to which the device may be adapted, for as before described, the device is not only adapted for the various uses set forth in the aforesaid patent, but is also readily convertible into a domestic-cooker adapted for light cooking of various kinds, and also to serve as a handy glue-pot beaten By making the screw-top nearly as large as the diameter of the boiler, the latter can be used for boiling eggs, 850., also the boiler can be more readily cleansed.
Having described my invention, What I claim is- 1. In a convertible apparatus, the combination'with a tank having a burner and curved guard or shield rising therefrom, a ring supported above the tank and secured to the up- 0 per edge of the said guard or shield, a boiler having a discharge arranged in the ring in a removable manner and provided with an opening adapted to receive a removable cap or vessel and opposite handle sections, extending from the boiler and tank and detachably connected to each other, substantially as specifled.
2. In a convertible apparatus, the combination with a tank having a burner, a curved shield extending from the tank, a ring supported in the shield above the tank, an L- shaped hollow handle section extending from the tank in rear of the shield, a boiler having a discharge arranged within the ring, and an L-shaped hollow handle section extending from the boiler and telescopically connected with the handle section of the tank, and a stop arranged on the handle-section of the boiler for limiting its telescopic movement,
substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GOODLOE O. TWYMAN.
