Description
-PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. WALKER, OF GUYS MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT m vAPoR-BATHs- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,905, dated June 12, 1877; application filed' April 16,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WALKER, of Guys Mills, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Vapor-Bath, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a plan view, having the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line at w in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
My invention consists of a boiler or vapor generator formed within a metallic cylinder, the lower portion of which is perforated and forms a receptacle for a lamp, while the upper portion is provided with a single rowof perforations for distributing the vapor that issues from the central aperture of the boiler-top.
Referring to the drawing, A is a'metallic cylinder, in which is secured the head a and the plane centrally-perforated head I). The
space between these heads is for the reception of the water or other liquid to be converted into vapor. Below the head a. perforations c are made in the sides of the cylinder A, and an inverted cap, 01, is fitted to its lower end,
which is also attached to abasepiece, e, which is of such size as to form a suitable foundation or the cylinder A. A lamp, 0, is secured to the center of the inner surface of the cap (1 by clips f. Between the head I) and the upper end of the cylinder there is a chamber 'or the distribution of the vapor generated in the boiler, and a row of perforations, y,
is made in the portion of the cylinder that surrounds the said chamber. A cap, h, covers the upper end of the cylinder A, and to it a disk, B, of wood is attached. A noz zle, '13, projects from the side of the boiler for attaching a rubber tube, which may connect the boiler with another generator, or with any ordinary culinary vessel which can be closed sufficiently tight to force the steam through the said rubber tube.
The manner of using the apparatus is as follows: Water is placed in the boiler, and the lamp, being filled with alcohol, is lighted and placed under the boiler, as shown in Fig. 2. The person using the vapor-bath is wrapped in a blanket, and the feet are placed upon the wooden covering B. As the vapor isgenerated it escapes through the central opening of the head b, and escapes through the perforations g.
Any liquid may be easily and quickly converted into vapor by means of this improved apparatus. The vapor-bath is designed for the treatment of diseases, for inducing sleep, for relieving pain, and nervousness.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I A vapor-bath consisting of the cylinder A, having the head a, the centrally-perforated head I), the perforations g c, the nozzle t, and the caps d h, the latter having the wooden cover B, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE W. WALKER.
