COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,335, dated May 14, 1895.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, NATHAN BAUGHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hammersleys Fork, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools for Binding and Splicing Wire; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a `plan View showing the operation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of same.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in tools for bending and splicing wire, and is more particularly designed as an improvement upon the tool described and claimed in my application, Serial No. 517,166, tiled July 11, 1894, the object being to provide the tool with means for more securely holding the wire during the operation of splicing.
With this object in View the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letters A, A designate the two inter-pivoted members which comprise the tool, provided with the wire grips a, cutters b, lock c, and the member A with the perforated projection d, and differential grooves or concavities e, e', e2, all as set forth in my said application.
The present invention particularly-consists in the addition to the tool of a holding device for securing the end portion of one of the wires being spliced. To form this holding device,
the members A, A are formed back of their common pivot with corresponding concavities f, f, which, when the two members are closed upon each other form a secure bit or grip for the end portion of the wire. Adjacent to said grip the members are countersunk or cut away on one face, forming, when the members are closed, a cavity g. Leading into this cavity is an aperture h in the member A.
In operation, one of the ends of the wire to be spliced is passed through the perforation of the projection d, thence through the aperture h, and into the grip f, j', where, upon closing and locking the members, it is securely held. The cavity g permits the wire to be readily guided from the aperture h into the grip. The tool is then brought up to the opposing wire until such wire lies in the groove e. The tool is then rotated about the wire. There should be two of the tools employed, one for each wire, and held one in each hand,- their rotations being opposite. After the splice has been formed in this manner, the end portions ofA the wires are disengaged from the tools and are cut oi.
Having thus describedV my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described tool for bending and splicing wire, comprising the two pivoted members A, A', one of said members having the perforated projection cl, and the differential grooves e, e', e2, forward of said projection, said members back of their' pivot having the wire gripsf,f,fthe cut away portions adjacent to said grips, and the aperture h leading through the member A into one of said cut away portions, substantially as specified.
