CORSET-FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,141, dated May 14, 189 5. Application filed August 10, 1894. Serial No. 519,918. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PETER MEYER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Ool0gne,in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in corset fastenings and has for its object to provide a fastening of a simple and inexpensive construction which shall have certain advantages for use over other similar devices heretofore made, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth. The novel features of my invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which serve to'illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of corset-stays provided with my improved fastening device, and Fig. 2 is a detached detail view of the fastening, drawn to an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a view showing one of the studs forming one element of the fastening device. Figs. 4 and 5 are views showing in side and edge elevation the separate members of the element of the fastening device shown in Fig. 2.

One of the stays is provided at suitable intervals with the bevel or conical headed studs a, a, while the other stay is provided at suitable intervals with hooks c, c, riveted thereto, and with safety dogs'or plates 0, c, pivoted at i to said hooks c. The movement of the dogs a on their pivots t is limited by stops 0, 0, projecting from opposite sides of hooks c, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 4.

The extremity of plate or dog 0' is provided with a hooked portion arranged to overlap the hooked extremity of the hook c, the extremities of the respective parts 0 and o being bent in opposite directions as clearly seen in Figs. 4 and 5. At its other end, the plate or hook c is provided with a light spring f, mounted on and projecting from its upper face, which spring is arranged in a recess 0 formed in the plate or dog 0. The recess 0 has an angular portion against which the free end of the spring f abuts as clearly shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines. Thus it will be seen that the free extremities of the parts 0 and c are normally held together by the pressure of spring f.

In fastening the stays it is preferable to be gin at the top and for this reason the upper hook c is cut deeper as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, so as to avoid accidental slippin g out of the studs (1. To close the other fastenin gs it is simply necessary to press the fastening devices down over the studs 0. which by reason of the conical form of their heads will readily pass between the hooks c and dogs 0. The unfastening of the stays may be elfected by simply forcing or pushing them toward one another whereby the dogs 0' will be raised to permit the withdrawal of the studs a.

IIaving thus described my invention, I claim- 7 1. The combination of the plate 0 havinga hooked end and having lugs projecting from its oppos'ite sides, the dog 0 pivoted to plate o, and having a recessed portion adjacent to said pivot, a spring mounted on plate a and projecting into said recessed .portion of the dog, the extremity of said dog being arranged between the stops on the plate 0 and adapted to'bear elastically against the hooked end of said plate.

2. In a corset-fastening, the combination of a pair of corset-stays, one stay provided, at

suitable intervals, with conical-headed studs, and the other stay, provided at likeintervals, with plates 0, each plate (0), having a hooked end and lugs projecting from its opposite sides, the dog 0' pivoted to plate a, and having a recessed portion adjacent to said pivot, a spring mounted on plate 0 and projecting into the recessed portion of the dog, the extremity of said dog being arranged between the stops on plates 0 and adapted to bear elastically against the hooked end of said plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
