UNITEDk STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT A. W. KRAMPITZ, OF BLUE EARTH CITY, MINNESOTA.
ATTACHMENT FOR PLUG-TOBACCO CUTTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming partpof Letters Patent NO. 539,138, dated May 14, 1895.
Application filed July 19, 1894.
To a/ZZwi/om it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. W. KRAM- PITZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Blue Earth City, in the county of Faribault and State of Minnesota, have inf vented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Plug-Tobacco Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as'will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadtto the accompanying drawings', and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an attachment which may be readily attached and detached from the frame of plug tobacco cutters, said attachment having Scrapers for engagement with the cutting blade which will remove the particles of tobacco that may adhere thereto; and my invention consists in the special construction of the attachment which provides means for attaching the same to the frame of the plug tobacco cutter so that the scraper of the attachment will be held against the blade of the cutter, and in the means for so doing, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing my improvement applied to a tobacco-cutter of ordinary construction, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
The tobacco-cutter is of ordinary construction and comprises a frame A in which moves a reciprocating knife or blade A operated by a lever A2.
B B designate the Scrapers which are attached to the members c c of spring bars O so that they will bear against each side of the blade of the cutter, the upper ends of the spring bars bearing against the frame A or against bearing plates supported thereon.
D designates a bail or loop which is adapted to encircle the frame of the cutter and retain the spring bars C in place thereon, the ends of the loop being screw threaded and provided With nuts which clamp upon a cross-bar CZ which bears against one end of the frame. The members c of the spring bars are preferably provided with spring coils to form eyes Serial No. 518,014. (No model.)
c through which the side pieces of the loop ass. p e c designate blocks, lpreferably of malleable metal, which are shaped on one side to con` form to the upper part of the frameAand are serrated on the other side to provide bearing surfaces for the upper ends of the spring bars By providing these bearing blocks the bars will not impinge against the frame of the cutter and :mar the ornamentation or lacquering on the same.
The form of the vbail or loop D may be varied to correspond with theY contour of the frame of the cutter, but it should be of such construction as to provide' bearings for the spring coils or eyes c ofthe spring bars.
The Scrapers are of such length that their ends will bear against the arched portion of the frame and prevent lateral movement, and as the Scrapers are held against the sides of the blade by spring pressure they will remove what tobacco may adhere to said blade.
It will be seen from the foregoing that I provide an attachment for plug tobacco cutters which may be readily attached to the frames of such implements Without any liability of marring the lacquering or ornamentation of the frame, and one that is not in any manner anl integral part of the frame, the attachment being adapted to be sold as a separate article of manufacture from the cutter.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An attachment for tobacco cutters, having a frame with a reciprocating blade, comprisin g a scraper, a spring bar attached thereto the upper end of said bar bearing against the frame of the cutter so as to hold the scraper in contact with thecutting blade, together bar, substantially as shown and for the purl pose set forth.
3. An attachment for cleaning the cutting blades of tobacco cutters, comprising scrapers, spring' bars to which said Scrapers are attached, a loop or bail D for retaining said spring bars upon the frame of the tobacco cutter, together with soft metal bearing blocks e e against which the upper ends of the spring bars bear, substantially as shown, for use in combination with a tobacco cutter for the purpose set forth.
4. An attachment which is adapted to be used in combination with a tobacco cutter, comprising Scrapers having spring bars and means for holding said spring bars upon the frame of the cutter, of bearing blocks e e having serrated faces against which the spring bars of the Scrapers impinge for the purpose of preventing the same contacting With the cutter, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT A. W. KRAMPITZ. YVitnesses:
W. H. MCDONALD, M. M. FRUR.
