SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,018, dated May 7, 1895.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ADoLPHUs CARRETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of` Jackson and State of vMichigan, have invented certain new and use- My invention has for its object the extend- I ing of the bearing points of the spring metal support and the reinforcing of the face edges of the ear portions so as to prevent them from folding inward and thus forming outwardly flaring openings leading into the ears endangering the ears instead of protecting them.
My invention consists of a body portion which surrounds the lower and back portion of the head and part of the face at the sides leaving the top of the head and chin free from incu'mbrances, having a support formed of a single piece of spring metal inserted between the material and lining forming the protector, extending around the upper edge and downward along the'face edges so that the latter may be caused to fit evenly in front of the ears and not be liable to gape and at the same time provide extended bearings for the support. t
In order that my invention may be--more fully understood I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of my ear and throat protector, and showing in dotted lines the support which is formed of a single piece of spring metal for holding the protector in shape and in position on the head.
Referring to the said drawing, 1 represents the body of the protector which forms a covering for the back part of the head and ears, and leaves the top of the head and chin free from incumbrances formed of any suitable cloth or material, 2 the lining and 3 the fiap 0r extension for covering the throat, which is detachably secured to the body of the protector. This flap 0r extension is composed of the same material as is the body and it may be either permanently or detachably secured yto the said body. In the drawing I have shown it detachably secured it being provided at either end with a clasp 4 by which it is secured to the body.

Thus it will be seen that I have formed a cheap, simple and eifective ear and throat protector that is easily adjusted to the head and retained in place thereon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with an ear protector having a body for covering the back part of the head and ears; of the support formed of a single piece of spring metal extending along the upper edge of the protector and having its ends extending downwardly along the face edges of the protector for itting the face edges snugly to the sides of the face and for spreading the bearings for the support on each side of the face; substantially as described.
