Patented May 7, 1895 f1 t 1- /TNESS S: /NVENTOH vedlge/fez 1y NITED STATESg PATENTV Enron- `GEORGE F. HENRY, OENEW YORK, N. Y.
NOZZLE FOR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,003, dated May 7, 1 895.
Application filed March 2, 1895. Serial No. 540,311. (No model.)
4 y To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HENRY, a
' citizen 'of the United States, residing in the AKO `u city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzles for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved nozzle for cans containing glycerine, petroleum, varnish and similar liquids, whereby the can may be conveniently emptied without loss of any liquid by spilling; and the invention consists of a nozzle for cans comprising a screw-neck attached to the discharge-opening of the can, a nozzle guided in said screwneck and provided with a screw-thread at its lower end fitting into the screw of the neck, and a screw-cap fitting over the nozzle on the screw-neck of the can, as will be fully described hereinafter and iinally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of a glycerine or other can, showing my improved nozzle respectively in inward and outward position; and Figs. 3 and 4. are vertical transverse sections, drawn on a larger scale, showing the nozzle in its inner position and as drawn out for permitting the'pouring out of the contents of the can.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a sheet-metal can of anyimproved construction, of that class which is used for shipping glycerine, petroleum, varnish and other similar liquids. To the top of the can at one corner of the same, is applied my improved nozzle B which is guided by a sheet-metal screw-neck @that is attached t0. the top of the can around the discharge-opening of the same, said screwneck being provided with an upwardly-extending annular shoulder a at its upper end against which the enlarged ends of the nozzle lBabut, when the latter is moved in an outward direction or pushed in a downward direction into the can. The cylindrical nozzle B is provided with a shoulder or wired ring b at its upper end, and with a sheet-metal screw B at its lower end, which latter screws into the stationary screw-neck a when the nozzle B is drawn outto its full extent and turned on its axis until the top of the screwBv abuts against the shoulder a at the upper end of the screwneck a., as shown in Fig. 4. In this position the contents of the canv may be conveniently poured out without spilling and loss of liquid. After a part or the entire contents of the can are poured out, the nozzle is pushed down again until the rim or shoulder b at its upper end abuts against the shoulder a of the screwneck a, as shown in Fig. 3. When the nozzle is in this position, the screw-cap C is screwed onto the outside of the screw-neck ct and thereby the discharge-opening of the can hermetically closed, the screw-cap C being provided at its inside with a suitable packing C that is pressed on the top of the screwneck c.
My improved nozzle for cans has the advantage that the same is held firmly in position when drawn out, so that the contents of the can may be easily poured out, without spilling; secondly, that the nozzle can be pushed in after pouring and the discharge-opening hermetically closed, so that the air or dust is prevented from entering the can and damaging the liquid still remaining in the same, and, thirdly, that the nozzle is always ready for use whenever required, and increases but little the expense of the can, while it increases considerably the facility by which the contents of the can may be poured out for use.
Having thus described my invention, 'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-` 1. An improved nozzle for cans, consisting of a sheet-metal screw-neck. applied to the discharge-opening of the can, said neck being provided with an inturned shoulder at its upper end, a cylindrical nozzle guided in said neck and provided with a shoulder or rim at its upper end, and a sheet-metal screw at its lower end fitting into the screw-neck, substantially as set forth.
2. A nozzle for cans, consisting of a sheetmetal screw-neck applied around the discharge-opening of the can and provided with an inturned shoulder at its upper end, a cylindrical nozzle provided with a shoulder or IOC rim at its upper end and with a sheet-metal my invention I have signed my nnmein presscrew at its lower end fitting into the sorewence of two subscribing witnesses. neck, and a sheet-metal screw-cap provided i 1 Y T with a packing at its inner end for Closing GEO F' HEB RX 5 hermeticaliy the neck when the nozzle is Witnesses:
pushed in, substantially as set forth. GEORGE W. JAEKEL,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as C. E. GAST.
