Description

SANBORN 1& BENNETT.
Stovepipe Damper.
No. 53,886. v Patented April 10, 1866 UNITEB STATES PATENT GFFICE.
RUFUS S. SANBORN AND WILLIAM BENNETT, OF BIPON, WISCONSIN.
STOVE-PIPE DANI PER.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent N0. 53,586, dated April 10, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, It. S. SANBORN and 'M. BENNETT, of Ripon, in the county ot' Fond du Lac and Stale of NVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove- Pipe Dampers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part ot' this specication.
The drawings herewith presented represent the stove-pipe damper within the stove-pipe, a one-half sectional view being shown.
rThe object of our invention consists in an economical and simple device to be used in any stove-pipe, the particulars of which are hereinafter described.
A represents an annular metallic plate with a circular opening in its center. Within this opening is placed a funnel-shaped tube, B, being secured to the plate A at about the center of said tube. Y
C represents the st.ove-pipe, to whichthe plate A, with tube B, is attached, being secured by means of any ordinary or known holders. The annular plate A fits snugly within the stove-pipe C, and is allowed to be revolved by the holders D and D/ acting as an axis.
It will readily be seen that in using this damper t-he draft is never entirely stopped, nor will this damper become clogged by the soot, as is the fault of many dampers now in use. The draft is much lessened when the small end of the funnel-shaped tube B is nearest the tire; but there is opening sufficient in that end to allow the products of combustion to pass freely up the chimney. When the larger end of the tube B is nearest the tire a more ethcient draft is had, and when the damper is turned all the way around upon its axis, with the edge ot' the plate A to the fire, a full draft is had.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The metallic plate A, with the funnel-shaped tube B, when arranged in the manner substantially as and for the purposes herein specitied.
As evidence that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands in the presence ot' two witnesses.
RUFUS S. SANBORN. NVM. BENNETT.
