Be it known that I, MAX-LESSER, of Duncansby, in the county of Issaquena and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Invalids Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved invalids table, which is comparatively simple and durable in construction, and arranged for convenient attachment to a bed, to permit an invalid or sick person to make use of the table when eating, drinking, reading, &c., without the assistance of a nurse or other person.

The invention consists in certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 isa side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. is a transverse section of the same on the line A i of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the table-support proper, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the leg for supporting the table when not in use on the bed.

The improved invalids table is provided with a plate A, having hooks A adapted to engage the side B of a bedstead,so as to form a support for a table, as hereinafter more fully described. The plate Ais adapted to be fastened in position on the bedstead by a set screw A as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 4. On the plate A are secured the vertically disposed guiderods or posts A A and A, on which is fitted to slide a bracket 0, formed with lugs extending at right angles to the main portion of the bracket, and forming a rest for the table D, adapted to extend from the side B of the bedsteadinward over the bed, so as to be in front of the patient or sick person resting in the bed.

said sections so as to permit of folding the section D downward into a vertical position,

at the time the table D is swung around to the outside of the bed to be disengaged from the lugs O of the bracket 0. The guide rods A A and A extend through the table section D, and the lugs O extend from the table section D under the other table section D so as to hold the two sections in a horizontal position. See Fig. 4.

In order to raise ,or lower the table D, I provide the center guide rod A with screw threads on which screws a nut E adapted to engage the under side of the bracket 0, at or near its middle, so that when the operator turns the said nut E, to move it in an upward direction, then the table D is raised, andby turning the nut in a downward direction the table D is lowered so as to suit the invalids convenience, as the case may require.

In order to steady the table, I provide the upper threaded end of the center guide rod A with a spring A, guided at its ends on the upper ends of the rods A and A the said spring being engaged at the top by a not A screwing on the guide rod A to give more or less tension to the said spring, to hold the table in the proper position.

It is understood that the free ends of the spring A rest on top of the table section D.

Each plateJ also engages a screw rod K, held on the table section D and engaged by anut K abutting against the under side of the plate K, so that when the operator screws the nut K downward. on the screw rod K, then the extension G or G will slide downward on the rods I, and screw rod K, to follow the nut K, until the desired position is reached for the convenience of the patient.

In order to use the table extension G or G for reading or for other purposes, it is necessary that the table D be given a quarter turn to bring the respective extension G or G in front of the patient. This is done by first screwing up the nut A on the guide rod A and then lifting the table until the section D clears the upper ends of the guide rods A and A, after which the table is free to turn on the guide rod A asafulcrum, untila quarter turn is made so as to bring the corresponding extension G or G in front of the patient.

WVhen it is desired to fold the table section D then a further turning is given to the table until a half revolution is made, so that the section D completely clears the lugs G of the bracket 0, to permit of swinging the section D downward into a vertical position, owing to the hinge D The extensions D and D can also be swung downward into a vertical position at any time by the operator unlocking the bolts D.

In order to make use of the table at atime when the same is not applied to a bed, I provide a leg L, see Fig 6, formed at its lower end with sub-legs L, and at its upper end with pins L adapted to engage corresponding apertures or recesses A arranged in the under side of the table section D as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.

A table of the construction described will permit an invalid to conveniently reach any food placed on the table, without the assistance of a nurse or other person, and he-is also enabled to reach other articles supported on the table, such as books, papers, &c.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a support having parallel vertical rods projecting therefrom, one of the rods being the longer, a vertically adjustable bracket sliding on the rods a table mounted onthe bracket, and an adjusting mechanism for raising and lowering the bracket and table, said bracket and table being adapted to be raised on the longer rod until disengaged from the shorter and then turned horizontally upon said longer rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with the support and its attaching devices, parallel vertical'rods extending from the support, the middle rod being longer than the others, abracket sliding vertically on said rods, and arms projecting from one side of the bracket, of the sectional table top having a section secured directly to the bracket, an adjusting mechanism, an extension hinged to said section to swing up into the plane thereof, and be supported on the bracket arms, the said bracket and table being adapted to be raised on the long rod above the shorter rods and then turned to permit the hinged leaf to swing down, substantially as described.

3. An invalids table, comprisingasupport adapted to be hung on the side of a bedstead and provided with guide rods or posts, a

bracket held to slide on the said guide rods and adapted to support the table proper, and a spring held on one of the said guide rods and engaging with its free ends the other guide rods, at the same time pressing upon the top of the table, substantially as shown and described.

4:. An invalids table, comprising a support adapted to be hung on the side of a bedstead and provided with guide rods or posts, a bracket held to slide on the said guide rods and adapted to support the table proper, a spring held on one of the said guide rods and engaging with its free ends the other guide rods, at the same time pressing upon the top of the table, and a nut screwing on the guide rod carrying the spring, to adjust the tension of the latter, substantially as shown and described.

5. The combination with the table top provided with a depending screw on its lower side, of a vertically adjustable section provided on its under side with a horizontal plate having an aperture through which the screw extends, a nut on the screw engaging the lower face of the plate to raise and lower it, and vertical guide pins parallel with the screw and passing through apertures in the said plate, substantially as described.

6. The combination with the support and the vertically adjustable bracket mounted thereon and having a table provided with hinged section having a depending screw on its lower face at one end, of vertically adjustable extension having a horizontal plate on its lower face provided with an aperture through which the screw freely passes, a nut on the screw engaging the lower face of the plate and guide pins parallel with the screw and passing through apertures in said plate at opposite sides of the screw, substantially as set to rest on the bracket arms when the bracket extensions being provided on their upper is in one position and adapted to swing down sides with suitable holders and supports rewhen the bracket is raised and turned as despeotively, substantially as described.
