No. 538,528. Patented Apr. 30, 1895.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
OLIVER J. LANE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PENClL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,528, dated April 30, 1895.
Application filed July 3,1894. Serial No. 516 ,456 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER J. LANE, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Pencil-Sharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved pencil sharpener, whichis simple and durable in construction, and arranged to permit the user to quickly and properly sharpen any sized pencil.
The invention consists in certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is asectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the improvement.
V The improved pencil sharpener is provided with a body A, made in the shape of a carpenters plane, and formed on its straight bot-' tom with an aperture A for the passage of the sharp edge B of the blade B, pivoted at B to the sides A of the plane body A. A screw 0 engagesa slot B in the said blade B, and the screw screws in the curved back A I formed on the plane body between the sides as plainly shown in the drawings.
By the arrangement described, the operator by simply unscrewing the screw 0, can move the blade B upward or downward so as to bring the sharp edge B a shorter or longer distance beyond the bottom surface of the plane A, to make a thick or thin shaving when using the tool on a lead pencil in the manner of using a carpenters plane.
As illustrated in Fig. 4, the bodyDis made of a single piece of sheet metal, formed with the straight portion D, through an aperture in which extends the sharp edge E of the blade E, fastened by a bolt or set screw F to the bent-up portion D of the plane body. A screw G screwing in the back of the plane body D engages the lower end of the blade E, so as to move its sharp edge E more or less below the under surface ofv the'straight portion D, for a thick or thin shaving.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described, the blades B or E can be readily detached for sharpening or other purposes, and also easily adjusted by the screw 0 or G respectively, to make a thick or thin shaving.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A pencil sharpener comprising the body having a transverse throat or aperture extending through it, the upper side or back of the body being provided with side flanges, a slotted curved bit pivoted between the side flanges and extending through said throat or aperture, and a screw extending through the bit slot into the upper side of the back, the head of the screw bearing on the upper convex side of the blade, substantially as described.
OLIVER J. LANE.
