BARBED FENCING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,401, dated April 30,1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS V. ALLIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Fencing, of which the following is a specification.

lll y invention relates to barbed fencing and consists of flattened metallic strips having integral barbs projecting from one edge in the plane of the strip between two notches cut into the edge to produce barbs ofA a mild character as thus formed, but which being drawn out lengthwise, make more effective barbs, while all the material of the strips excepting a slight waste from the notches is retained for strength, sightliness and conspicuous appearance, as hereinafter fully described reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which= Figure l is a plan View of a short piece of fencing .of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a like piece twisted to distribute the barbs axially around ,the strip. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the strip.

I provide attened strips a, of suitable width for strength and conspicuous appearance, and at suitable intervals along one edge cut two shallow notches b, side by side so as to produce a barb point c, between them, the extremity of which is in line with the edge of the strip. lreferably I make curved notches as shown but they may be of other shape. These points thus developed by the notches form practicable barbs of a mild form quite sufcient for gentle and tractable animals,

but I also make them a little more prominent when desired by swaging the points length# wise and drawing them out to somewhat greater projection than the edge of the strip as represented in the drawings.

I claiml. Barbed fencing consisting of flattened strips having integral barbs at intervals along one edge of, and in the plane of the strip,be tween two notches made in the edge to form the barbs, the portions ofthe strips intermediate of the notches being the full width of the strips and parallel with the other edge from notch to notch and the points of said barbs projecting beyond the line of the edge ot' the strip substantially as described.

2. Barbed fencing consisting Ot' flattened strips havingintegral barbs at intervals along one edge of, and in the plane of the strip, between two notches made in the edge to form the barbs, said barbs being swaged or drawn lengthwise and sharpened, and the points projecting beyond the line of th e edge of the strip substantially as described.

3. Barbed fencing consisting of flattened stripsrhavin g integral barbs at intervals along one edge of, and in the plane of the strip, said barbs being swaged or drawn lengthwise and sharpened substantially as described.
