SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,778, dated April 16, 1895. n

To all whom t may concern.: i Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. KELLEY, of Great Falls, in the county of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in sash holders, and the object of my invention 'is to produce a device of the greatest simplicity, which is peculiarly adapted to car windows, but which may be applied to any ordinary window sashes, which dispenses with the use of sash Weights, which enables the window sash to be easily raised or lowered, which also serves to hold the sash at any desired height, which may be adjusted conveniently so as to move with the desired freedom, which may be conveniently applied to the sash, and which is constructed in such a way that it is not likely to get out of order.
To these ends my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar iigures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a car window, provided with my improved sash holder. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional elevation of the holder, as applied to the sash. Fig. 3
is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of- Fig. 2; and Fig. 4. is a cross section on the line 4 4. of Fig. 2.
I have shown a car window sash 10 slidable in the customary manner in a frame 11, but it will be understood that the device may be applied to any sliding window. The sash holder is contained in a case 12 which is preferably rectangular and which is provided with a back plate 13 to close the inner side of the case and to fit against the window sash, and both case and plate are provided with perforated lugs or iianges 14 which are adapted to lie against the window sash and 'receive fastening screws 15. The case is open at one end, as shown best in Fig. 2, and this open end is placed even with the edge of the sash, so that the wheel16 which is held inthe case may project through the said open end and run on the frame 11. This wheel is of elastic mateforked head 18 and this has its members madeby preference of triangular cross section, see Fig. 4, so that they may run easily in the slideways 19 which are secured to the inner side of the case 12 and to the opposite plate 13. This arrangement insures the easy movement of the wheel in and out and enables it to be held steadily so as to turn without wabbling. The forked head 18 is secured to a screw 2O which connects with a screw 21 fastened to the inner end of the case 12 by means of a nut 22, and the screws 20 and 2l are of opposite pitch, while the nut is correspondin gl y threaded and so, by turning the nut, the screw 2O maybe moved in or out and the head 18 and wheel 16 which it carries correspondingly moved and adjusted.
In using my device, two cases 12 and their contained wheels are placed at opposite edges of the sash near the bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, and when Vthe cases are fastened in place they are pressed up close to the frame 11 so that the flexible wheels 12 will be slightly compressed, and thus the friction of the wheels will cause the sash to remain stationary in` any position in which it may be left and the wheels being pivoted as they are, enables the sash to run easily and they prevent the sash from rattling.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a sash-holder the combination of a case comprising a front plate and a detachable back plate, said case having an open end and being provided with longitudinal guide ways, a head mounted to slide in the guide ways, a friction Wheel journaled in the head and adapted to project from the open end of the casing, a screw threaded projection fixed on the rear end of the head, a corresponding but oppositely screw threaded projection fixed on the rear end of one plate of the case, and a nut having opposite screw threads to engage said oppositely threaded projections, substaue tially as set forth.
