SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,334, dated April 9, 1895. Application filed July 2, 1894. Serial No. 516,377. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter Bowers and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of refer: ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of shutter pull and lock. Fig. 3 is a detail of bracket. Fig. 4 is a detail of sill plate. Fig. 5 is a detail of single socket. Fig. 6 is a cross-section through socket g of sill plate.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in shutter bowers and fasteners and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
An object of the invention is to provide the bracket by means of which the bowing rod is attached to the shutter with means for supporting said rod when the shutter is in closed position.
A further object is to provide the shutter.
with a double, burglar-proof lock of improved character.
A still further object is found in the provision of an improved sill plate having peculiar sockets for engagement with the bowing rod, and of" such character that they readily permit the escape of water therefrom, and facilitate their being cleaned.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates the sill of a window casing, and B the shutter hinged to the side post of such casing in the ordinary manner.
0 designates the bowing rod, which has a hooked free end a, and which is pivoted at its opposite end in a bracket D affixed to the lower, inner rear portion of the shutter. Said bracket D consists of a casting having a perforated flange base I) by means of which it is secured to the shutter. Projecting inwardly from said base flange b are two substantially parallel flanges 0, connected near their extremities by a stud or pin (1 upon which the bowing rod is pivoted, and forming between them an opening or cavity to permit the play of said rod. Said flangesc are usually strengthened by reinforcing ribs e. The base flange b is extended at 1) toward the forward edge of the shutter and is formed at both ends, its upper and lower edges with an inwardly projecting flangef, the two such flangesforming between them a groove into which the bow- 1 ing rod is swung back against the shutter in the position it assumes when the shutter is closed. Said flanges f are somewhat wider where they join the flanges 0, than at their extremities, and the space or groove separating their inner faces is of less height than the space separating the innerfaces of the flanges c, forming somewhat of a shoulder or rise where the two flanges join, as indicated at (1'.
G designates my improved sill plate, which comprises, a casting having perforations at its base by means of which it is secured to the sill. Projecting from said base is a series of sockets g, having each in the outer wall.

The end socket 9' receives said hooked end when the shutter is closed, and forms a lock therefor. K is a single socket aflixed to the sill, and with which the bowing rod engages to hold the shutter in its wide open position.
The lock H above referred to comprises a small lug pivoted in a cut away portion of the shutter pull I, and having a slot 70, to form customary to make the look also serve as the shutter pull, but this is objectionable for the reason that if the lock is being pulled to swing the shutter to, it does not drop automatically 1 into engagement with the catch, as it does in the arrangement above described. It will be observed, also, that the pull plate forms a guard to the look, so that it cannot be unfastoned by the insertion of a wire from theoutside.
If it is not desired to employ the double lock afforded by the engagement of the bowing rod with the socket said rod may be held up in the groove of the bracket, substantially as described.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, andldesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a shutter bower andfastener, the combination with the bracket 1) having an extension toward the forward edge of the shutter, said extension havingupper and lower flanges f, f, and a bowing rod pivoted in said bracket and arranged to seat between said flanges when not in locking or bowing position, of a sill plate having a series of sockets thereon to receive the hooked end of said rod, said sockets having each a vertical opening in its lateral wall to facilitate the escape of dirt and water therefrom, and a pull plate carried by the shutter and having a catch adapted to drop overa projection of said sill plate substantially as specified.
2. In a shutter bower and fastener, a sill plate having a series of sockets thereon to receive the hooked end of the bowing rod, said sockets having each a vertical opening in one side, to permit the escape of water and dirt from said sockets substantially as specified.
3. In a shutter bower and fastener, the sill plate G, having a series of sockets thereon, an opening in the outer wall of each of said sockets, and an incline leading up to one of the end sockets, said end socket being deeper at its outer than at its inner portion, substantially as specified.
4. In a shutter bower and fastener, the combination with the bowing rod, of a sill plate having a series of sockets, and a catch projection thereon, and a slotted pullvplate carried by the shutter. said plate having a projection above its slot, and aslotted lng pivoted in said slot, and adapted to engage the projection of the sill plate, said leg when turned back being received in the slot of said pull plate, substantialiy as specified.
