SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,281, dated April 9, 1895.

Application filed February 24, 1893- Serial No. 463,663. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern) Be it known that I, MARY J. FOXWORTHY,-

a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Waterproof Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved garment protector, and has for its object to provide a combined cloak, skirt, and limb protector, and arranged in such manner as to protect the person of the wearer and the outer and under-clothing, the same being especially designed for the use of women and children,

To these ends the invention consists in a garment protector constructed in the manner hereinafter fully described and definitely pointed out in the claim following the description, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective'view, partly in section, illustrating my improved garment fittedmade open in front' from the neck to a point 4 below the waist, the meeting edges being fastened by hooks and eyes, or other suitable fastenings.

The skirt 2 is designed to nearly touch the ground and at its bottom is turned in and up, as at 5, forminga double fold between or within which are arranged the dress and under skirts.

' The leggins 3 form a'continuation of the skirt. I wish it to be understood that I do not use the word leggins in its conventional sense, but by that term mean any form of dual garment that covers both limbs of the wearer from the knees to the ankles, the leggins being preferably made'after the manner of trousers and provided at the lower ends with elastic cords that serve to confine them closely about the ankles.

If desired the leggins may be made to open on the sides and provided with fastenings, or may be made merely to present the appearance of conventional leggins. -6 indicates a short skirt provided at its upper hemwith an elastic cord or belt to confine the same about the waist, and at its bottom edge is permanently secured by stitching or otherwise to the skirt of the garment at the point of junction between the skirt and leggins, as shown.

To the back of the body 1, and to the inte I rior thereof, at a point about midway between the arm holes, is secured one end of a strap or braid 7, to the other end of which is secured a hook 8 that detachably engages an eye 9 secured to the waist band of the skirt 6 when the garment is not in use and serves to hold up said skirt, the lower portion 5 of the skirt 2, and the leggins 3.

10 indicates the combined cape and hood consisting of a single piece of fabric cut to the desired shape and provided with a hem about its outer edge within which is arranged a draw string 11. By spreading out the fabric a cape covering the back and shoulders, as shown in Fig. 1, is provided, and by throwing the same up over-the head and tightening the draw string 11, a hood closely enveloping the head is obtained.

The combined hood and cape is detachably secured to the neck band of the garment by hooks and eyes, or other suitable fastenings.

I have shown a strap 12 secured to the back of the garment upon the inside for the purpose of drawing in the same at the small of the back, but this forms no part of my present invention, being commonly used on ladies loose wrappers and similar garments.

The garment constructed as above described affords a most effectual protection to all parts of the body and limbs of the wearer against the entrance of moisture or cold and eEectually prevents both the inner and outer garments from being soiled by rain, snow, or mud.

When it is desired to dry the garment after exposure to the weather, the leggins and the inner fold 5 of the skirt 2 are drawn out from within the latter, the strap 7 being first detached from the waist band of the skirt 6,
