' ONE-PIECE GARMENT Filed A ril 29, 1944 INVHVTOR, JOSEPH HIE/(V6.41? TEN BY I 1.9 Arr-ohms) Patented Oct. 1, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I 2,408,537 r v ONE-PIECE GARMENT Joseph Weingarten, Bronx. N. Y., Application April 29, 1944, Serial No. 533,299
. 2 Claims.
The invention relates to one-piece garments and more particularly to protective garments for children as exemplified for instance by the socalled snow suits.
The object of the invention is to provide a one-piece garment constructed in a novel'manner to present the appearance of a two-piece garment including a coat.
The invention contemplates further a onepiece garment of the type indicated which is good-looking when worriand provides adequate protection and warmth for the wearer, and which is easily put on and removed at will.
Other objects will appear from the description hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates an example of the invention without defining its limits, I
' Fig. 1 is a front view of the novel garment as it appears when closed; I V
Fig. 2 is a rear view ofsaid garment;
Fig. 3 is a front view of the garment as it appears when open for putting it on and removing it from the wearer;
Fig. 4 is a, front View of the garment in a partly closed condition;
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the garment closed to a further extent, and
Fig. 6 is a side view of the novel garment.
Generally speaking the novel garment comprises a lower section and an upper section integral therewith and constructed of any suitable fabric or other material.
The lower section includes leg members which in the illustrated example consist of rear pieces Ill of material and united with front pieces II of material along outer seams I2 and similar inner seams to the crotch l3. From the latter upward the rear pieces III ar connected with each other along a center seam I4 to form the middle or waist portion of the garment. rear pieces III are continued upwardly in the form of back pieces I5 connected with each other along the center seam M as shown in Fig, 2 to form the back of the upper section of the garment. Suitable sleeve members I6 may be combined with the back pieces I5, for instance, along the seam I! as illustrated in Fig. 2 or in any other suitable manner, said sleeve members I6 being provided with elastic cuffs I8 designed to stituting a, tongue which comprises a foldable extension of the leg members at the front of the garment. The latter in addition includes cooperating coat members 22 connected with the back pieces I5 along seams l2 which form upward continuations of the outside leg seams I2, as shown in Fig. 6. The coat member 22 further are connected with the sleeve members I6 along seams 23 and are so embodied in the garment aS to have their lower edges a relatively free and loose as shown in the illustrated example. The coatmembers 22 are dimensioned to extend over and cover the tongue 2|, 2| when the latteris in its operative'position and are provided with co-operating fastening devices such as buttons 24 and buttonholes 25 whereby said coat members 22- may be secured in detachable connection with each other over the aforesaid tongue to present the appearance of a closed coat. Suitable means may be provided for detachably maintaining the tongue 2|, 2| in its raised position, as for instance by providing said tongue with buttonholes 26 for engagement with buttons 21 suitably secured to the upper part of the garment as shown inthe drawing.
Obviously, the buttons and buttonholes illustrated and described as fastening devices for the hug the wrists for warmth if desired. In such case, the leg members may be also provided with elastic euifs I9 designed to hug and enclose the coat members 22 and the tongue 2|, 2|, respectively, may be replaced by other types of fastening means whereby these elements may be detachably secured in place. The garment may also include a conventional collar 28 fastened in place in any conventional manner.
In the normal condition when the garment is open the coat members 22 are disconnected from each other and folded to an open position as shown for instance in Fig. 3, while the tongue 2 I, 2| may occupy its downwardly folded position as also shown in Fig. 3 to thereby enable the garment to be easily put on or removed from the wearer. After the garment has been donned by the wearer the tongue 2|, 2| may be folded upwardly in upright relation to the lower section of the garment so as to cover the upper body and chest of the wearer and secured in this position by connecting the buttonholes 26 with the buttons 21 or by connecting other equivalent types of fastening means which may be provided. The coat members 25 may then be folded over said upright tongue 2|, 2| in external relation thereto to simulate a coat and may be secured in detachable connection with each other over the tongue 2|, 2| by means of the buttonholes 25 and button 26, or equivalent fastening means. If desired, the garment may include a belt or tape 2% suitably embodied in the garment at the waistline and adapted to be tied about the waist of the wearer in the form of a bow knot 30 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. To further add to the ornamental appearance of the garment the latter may be gathered or shirred at the back about the waist line as indicated at 3| in Fig. 2.
To remove the garment from the wearer, the bow knot 30 is untied to release the band or tape 29 after which the buttons 24 and buttonholes 25 are detached from each other to permit the coat members 22 to be folded to open positions and the tongue 2!, H to be released by detaching the buttonholes 26 from the buttons 21 and then folded downwardly to th e position illustrated in Fig. 3. At this stage'the garment may be readily removed from the wearer as will be apparent.
The novel combination garment is ideally adaptable for use as a protective garment, particularly for children, and when worn in the closed condition illustrated in Fig, 1 provides a maximum of protection for the wearer against snow, sleet, rain and the elements in general. When worn the garment presents an attractive and ornamental appearance and gives the impression of being a two-piece suit consisting of a lower leg section and an upper coat section.
While the novel garment is particularly adaptable for use as a so-called snow suit it obviously may be used with equal efiiciency for other types of garments designed'for children and even for adults. The garment may be made of fabrics or other suitable materials and may easily be removed and put on by children or adults, as the case may be.
Although the present invention has been described in conjunction with a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that modifications and variations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as those skilled in the art will readily understand. Such variations and modifications are considered to be within the purview and scope of the claims.
Iclaim:
1. A one-piece garment comprising a lower section including leg members, a tongue foldably connected with said lower section at the front thereof dimensioned and foldable in upright relation to said lower section to cover the upper body and chest of the wearer, an upper section connected with said lower section and including a back and sleeve members, co-operating coatmembers foldably associated with said upper section and extending below the waist line at the front of the garment in detached relation thereto, said coat-members being foldable over said upright tongue in external'relation thereto to simulate a coat, co-operating means on said upper section and said tongue for detachably securing the latter in its upright position, and means for securing said coat-members in detachable connection with each other externally over said tongue.
2. A' one-piece garment comprising a lower leg section, an upper section integrally combined with said lower leg section, a tongue foldably associated with said leg section at the front thereof dimensioned and foldable in upward relation thereto to cover the upper body and chest of the wearer, means for detachably maintaining said tongue in its upright position, coat-members foldably associated with said upper section and externally foldable over said tongue, said coat-members extending below the waist line in detached relation to said lower leg section to simulate a coat, and means for securing said coatmembers in detachable connection with each other externally over said'tongue,
