M. W. A. JONES. SHUTTER PASTENER AND BOWER.
No. 587,040. Patented Apr. 9, 1895.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE W. ASHLEY JONES, OF LEHIGH COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER FASTENER AND BOW ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,040, dated April 9, 1895.
Application filed October 20, 1893. Serial No. 488.684 (No model.)
1 '0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAURICE W. ASHLEY JONES, of Lehigh county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in Shutter-Bowers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to shutter bowers and it has for its object the production of a new and improved highly efficient device of this character which shall be simple and inexpensive and b y means of which the blindsor shutters can be firmly locked together and securely held at any desired angle or inclination.
The invention consists ofthe novel features of construction, and the detail combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In theaccompanying drawingz- -Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 are views in elevation showing the difierent positions at which the bolt may be adjusted. Fig. 5 is a view of the bolt.
Referring to the drawings, A, A, designate two face-plates which are designed to be socured by means of screws, or their equivalents, to the inner faces of the blinds or shutters (not shown). Upon the outer faces of these plates are keepers a and a, in which are formed threaded holes or openings to accommodate holding screws B.
O is the bolt fitted within, and capable of sliding, in keepers a, and a, one end of said bolt being provided with a lip O to prevent its withdrawal through the keeper a. This bolt is composed of a series of pivotally connected sections of unequal length. The section I) which is longer than any of the others, fits within keeper 0!, and to it is pivoted a short section b to which in turn is pivotedav longer section b and to this latter ispivoted a short end-section 11 The bolt is held firm at any desired point in the keepers by the screws B, which can be readily and easily turned. The connections between the sections are formed by tongues 19 fitting between ears b between which said tongues are 7 held by pivot rods.
When the blinds are closed together the ad j acent edges of the face-plates are caused to abut and the hinged joints of the bolt-sec tions are inclosed within the keepers. Thus thescrews being tight the shutters cannot be opened. By loosening either one or both of the screws the blinds or shutters can be moved apart the desired extent and held at any angle, according-to the number of bolt sections withdrawn from within the keepers, the hinged joints of which sections have to be moved beyond the outer ends of the keepers in order to permit of the turning of the sections on such joints.
The advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains and it will be specially observed that I have provided simple, inexpensive and highly efficient means whereby blinds or shutters may be securely locked together or bowed and held at any desired angle or inclination and without danger of being drawn or forced apart.
I claim as my invention- The shutter fastener or bower herein de-' scribed, consisting of the two face-plates having keepers projecting therefrom provided with threaded holes or openings, holding screws working in said holes or openings, and the bolt fitted in said keepers and composed of a series of sections pivotally connected together all of said sections being formed of unequal lengths and provided with overlapping ears and tongues through which the pivot pins are passed, one of said sections, namely, the longest one, having a lip at its free end to limit its movement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAURICE W. ASHLEY JONES.- Witnesses:
HARRY 0. Corn, J. B. KEMERER.
