' A. W. OHESTERTON.
STEAM PAGKING Patented Apr. 2
WITNEEEEE- |N w ATT'YE- tion, in which NITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
ARTHUR W. OHESTERTON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS} STEAM-"PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,849, dated April 2, 1 895. Application filed January 5, 1894. Serial No. 495,733. '(No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. CHESTER- TON, of Boston,in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Packing, of which the following is a description suffi ciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming Figure 1 is a transverse section of my improved steam packing; Fig.'2, an elevation enlarged of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures .of the drawlngs.
My invention relates especially to an improvement in piston packing, or packing for steam-joints; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simple, cheap and effective device of this character.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the packing considered as a whole. ,The packing comprises a core, B, which is preferably rectangular in cross-section and is constructed of rubber treated with. antimony to resist the part of this specificaheat friction. This core is coated with a coat ing, O, of plumbago and the Whole is incased with a woven covering of hemp and soft copper wire, f. his covering may be treated with tallow or a similar lubricant and is extremely flexible conforming readily to the parts to which it is applied. The soft copper Wire interwoven with the hemp holds the packing in shape against the friction of the parts and prevents it matting. The rubber core treated in the manner described is not readily affected by the heat caused by friction and an exceedingly cheap and durable article is produced. The Wires, f, will not scratch the metallic parts to which they are applied as they are protected by the hemp.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. A steam packing comprising a core of antimony compound surrounded by a textile material having wire woven therein.
