Description

No. 884,634. PATENTED APR. 14, 1908.- 'H.TLBRAGG. HOSE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 15. 1906- WITRESSEI. hIIFfl/ill V W HENRY T. BRAGG, OF YONKERS, NEW. YORK.
HOSE
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed February 15, 1906. Serial No. 301,143.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. BRAGG, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of Yonkers, in the county of IVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hose, of which the following 1s a specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide certain improvements in hose whereby a continuous wrapping strip may be incorporated therein, the side portions of such strip being formed thinner than the intermediate portion thereof so that when the strip is Wrapped around the hose, the thinner side portions of the strip which overlap each other will make up substantially the. thickness of the intermediate portion whereby a continuous wrapper is formed of substantially the same thic iness throughout.
A further object is to provide a hose of the above character in which the wrapping strip is formed of a fiat knitted fabric the intermediate portion of which is closely knitted and the side portions are loosely knitted so that the results set forth may be accomplished, the Wrapper at the same time permitting a hose to be made which will be very flexible and in which the liability of bursting under great strain is materially reduced.
It has been usual in making various kinds of hose which is formed in part of rubber, to use a woven fabric cut on the bias, the said fabric being wrapped around an inner rubber tube, the side portions and the ends of the bias strips being caused to overlap. This construction gives rise to an uneven wra ping of the hose in which leaks are frequentFy occurring owing to the fact that the bias strips must be necessarily shortas they are limited in length to the diagonal distance across a certain width of woven fabric.
In the accompanying drawing the illustration shows a section of hose with one layer of my improved wrapping strip applied thereto,
the outer cover 0 the hose being broken away to more clearly show said wrapping strip in its position within the hose.
The inner tube of the hose is denoted by 1 and the outer tube is denoted by 2. The wrapping strip which is shown in the present instance as comprising a single layer consists of a strip of flat knitted fabric the side portions 3 and 4 of which are knitted thinner than the intermediate portion 5. In the method of Winding shown in the accompanying drawings, the thinner side portion 3 is caused to overlap the thinner side portion 4 as the strip is wound spirally along the hose, thus producing an even outer surface free from ridges, the overlapping side portions 3 and 4 together being of sufficient thickness to correspond with the thickness of the intermediate portion 5.
Itis to be understood that the hose may have incorporated therein any number of layers of my improved Wrapping strip, the winding of one layer either being the reverse to the Winding of another layer or in the same direction in staggered order for the purpose of breaking seams.
A hose constructed as herein described would be well adapted for high pressure work, such, for instance, as the air brake hose in railway service.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A hose having a wrapping strip composed entirely of fabric incorporated therein comprising a thicker intermediate portion and thinner side portions, the side portions being overlapped to conform in thickness to the thicker intermediate portion, thereby forming a continuous wrapper of substantially the same thickness throughout.
2. A hose having a wrapping strip of knitted fabric incorporated therein comprising a closely knitted intermediate portion and loosely knitted side portions, the side portions being overlap ed to conform in thickness to the thicker intermediate portion thereby forming a continuous wrapper of substantially the same thickness throughout.
8. A hose having a wrapping strip of fiat knitted fabric comprising a closely knitted intermediate portion and loosely knitted side portions, the side portions being overlapped to conform in thickness to the thicker intermediate portion thereby forming a continuous wrapper of substantially the same thickness throughout.
In testimony, that I claim theforegoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 10th ebruary 1906.
HENRY T. BRAGG.
