SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,507, dated March 26, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ASA H. BRUMFIELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shades; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as -will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front elevation of invention applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of invention partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of invention. Fig. 4 is a detail of locking piece.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in means for supporting and operating window shades, the object being to provide a simple and efficient device whereby a shade can be readily adjusted to cover any desired portion of a window; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a bracket, which is designed to be affixed to the upper central portion of a window frame or casing as shown in Fig. 1. Said bracket at its upper portion has a horizontal, outward flange a, in which is formed an elongated sloth, which is designed to receive the nose 0 of the locking piece 0. Said piece on its inner face has a rib or projection d which slides in a vertical groove e, in the vertical arm of the bracket A. The nose 0 of said piece is somewhat pointed and is formed with teeth or serrationsf. On the outer face of said piece 0 is a recessgin which works the short arm of an angle lever D pivoted to the bracket at its angle, and having a perforated bent arm h at its opposite extremity.

the lower wall of the recess g, and throws the locking piece down out of engagement with the slot b releasing the cord, the branches of which are bound in said slot by the nose 0. The cord Will then play freely to raise or lower the shade. Bringing the lever back to normal position by an opposite pull on the loop H throws the nose (3 back into the slot 1) and again binds the branches of the cord.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The herein described locking device for window shade cords, said device consisting of a bracket A, having at its upper portion a horizontal outward flange a, formed with an elongated slot 1), said bracket also having a vertical grooved arm, a locking piece 0 slidably seated in the groove of said arm, and

having a tapered toothed nose 0 at its upper end arranged to move into the said slot 1), and an angular lever bar D pivoted to the said bracket and having a short arm adjacent to the pivot which loosely engages a recess of 2.
