A. EOK. MINBRS GANDLBSTIGK.
No. 586,460. Patented Mar. 26, 1895.
' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST EOK, OF HELENA, MONTANA.
MINERS CANDLESTICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,460, dated March 26, 1895.
Application filed March 13 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST EOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners" Candlesticks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a miners candlestick and has for its object'to provide a folding device of the character set forth, having a telescopic action in order to protect all the sharp points of the same so as to make it safe for transportation or storage in the pocket of a miner.
With these and other objects in view. the invention consists of the construction and arrangement which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of theimproved candle-stick in position for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, shown folded and ready for carrying in the pocket. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the device arranged as shown in Fig. 2.
Similarnumerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several Views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cylindrical hollow tube which is enlarged at one end, as at 2, and in the tube is formed'an elongated slot 3 having a looking holder or recess 4 at one end of the same. To the free end of the enlarged portion 2 of the tube is rigidly secured a combined guard or handle 5, which is provided with a notch 6 on the inside portion thereof and on the back of said guard is a milled or roughened surface 7 for the purpose of lighting matches. The slot 3 extends entirely through the end of the enlarged portion 2 of the tube at the point to which the said handle or guard is attached.
Within the tube 1 and its enlarged portion 2 is mounted a pointed rod 8 which has pivotally secured to theinner end thereof a head 9 provided with a flattened ear 10 extending 1394. SerialNo.503,50L (No model.)
surrounding the said rod, as clearly shown.
The said spring and sleeve operate the head 9 to throw it to one side and engage the recess or holder 4 when the device is arranged as shown in Fig. 1, in order to lock the said head in its adjusted position and allow pressure to be used on the handle or guard to drive the sharp points of the rod 8 into'timbers or any other supporting substance to prevent it from being accidentally moved while holding the handle. v
The head 9 is provided with a guiding portion 15 fitting into slot 3 for the purpose of guiding and steadyingthe said head in moving the same back and forth through the said slot. Secured to or formed with the said head isa candle holding sleeve 17. On the opposite side'of the said head to that on which the candle holding sleeve is mounted, is a suspending hook 18 for the purpose of hanging the candle stick upon the head or any other projection.
The pointed head or spike 8 is adapted to be used for supporting the candle stick at any point desired by thrusting the pointed end thereof into a beam or ledge or in any other suitable place.
The parts of the device are so arranged that the combined guard and handle can be removed from the enlarged portion 2 of the tube by releasing a set screw 19 as shown in Fig. 3. w
The device is composed essentially of four parts and can be cheaply made and sold.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a miners candle-stick, the combination of a slotted tube and combined handleor guard at one end thereof, a rod adapted to be moved back and forth mounted in said tube andacandle-supporting sleeve pivotally attached to the said rod and adapted to be adjusted longitudinally of the tube and also folded and inclosed within said combined handle and guard, substantially as described.
2. In a miners candle-stick, the combination of a tube, having a slot in one portion thereof, with a shoulder therein, a combined handle and guard mounted on one end of said tube, a rod movably mounted in said tube, and having a spring actuating the same, and a head carrying a candle -supporting sleeve, and a hook, said head being adapted to be thrown into the said shoulder of the slot, in the tube, to hold the candle support- 120 ing sleeve and hook in any adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib-.
ing witnesses.
