PATENT STUB-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 536,409, dated March 26,1 895. Application filed January 9, 1895. Serial No.' 534,3l3. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM WILLIS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Wallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stub-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate several forms in which I have contemplated embodying my invention and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the said drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of a check book with one form of my improved stub holder applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the same partly in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the form of holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a slightly modified form of holder. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same, aportion of the spring arm being broken away. Fig. 6 is a plan view of still another slight modification of my holder. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the same, the arm being broken away, and Fig. 8 is a sectional view of a portion of a holder showing the parts secured together by a bolt and nut instead of a rivet.
My improved stub holder consists essentially of a supporting plate A, adapted to be secured to the book cover by passing its ends through slits cut in the cover and a spring arm B.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the plate A is shown as provided with a longitudinal slot at and the spring arm B is secured to the plate A by a rivet, or bolt and nut 12, passing through said slot. The arm B is therefore free to swing sidewise on the bolt or rivet as a pivot and the position of the arm can be quickly and readily adjusted by sliding the bolt or rivet along the slot'a. I
In Figs. 4. and 5 I have shown the slot a provided with an enlargement a at one end and the spring arm B is secured to the plate A by a button I) which can be inserted and removed from the slot through the enlargement at thus permitting the arm B to be removed when desired.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown the plate A without a slot andthe arm B riveted positively thereto by a rivet b and this form will answer for many purposes. In Fig. 8 I have shown the parts connected by a bolt b and nut instead of by a rivet.
In using the device two slits are made in the cover of a check, receipt or other book, at a less distance apart than the length of the supporting plate, the ends of which are then inserted in said slits as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I prefer to form the plate with pointed or rounded ends as shown to facilitate this op eration. The spring arm is then made to bear upon the stubs in the most advantageous manner. I
In using the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, if. it is desired to move the point of pivoting of the arm toward or from the stubs this can be readily accomplished by sliding the plate A through the slits in the cover until the arm B is in the desired position. It will thus be seen that in all the forms of my holder shown and described the point of pivoting of the spring arm can be adjusted toward and from the stubs thus giving the most effective pressure from the spring arm.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a book having one of its covers provided with parallel slits, of a plate engaging said slits, said plate being of greater length than the distance between said slits, and a spring arm pivotally connected with said plate, whereby the point of pivot ing of said arm may be adjusted in a direction longitudinally of said plate by moving said plate in said slits, substantially as described.
2. A stub holder comprising among its members, a slotted supporting plate adapted to be secured to a book cover, a spring arm, and a connecting device engaging said slot for pivotally securing said arm to said plate whereby the point of pivoting of said arm can be ad gage said aperture and slot to connect said 16 justed toward and from the stubs, substanarm and plate, substantially as described.
tially as described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature 3.
