FORCE AND LIFT PUMP.

Be it known that I, EDWARD BROCKWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gold Hill, in the county of Grant and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force and Lift Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the letters of reference marked on the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to'pumps for forcing liquids.
More particularly stated the object of my invention is to provide a force and lift pump with proper valve apparatus and attachments, with a staff or pump rod balanced as to gravity, by means of which I obtain the maximum amount of work with the minimum expenditure of energy.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the following construction and combination of parts, the details of which will first be fullyset forth and described, and the features of novelty therein then pointed out and claimed.
The drawing represents a longitudinal central section of the pump apparatus embodying my invention.
In the drawing, A represents the main pump column or tube.
B is the pump cylinder proper.
C is the piston or plunger, made hollow so as to displace a sufficient amount of water to counteract its gravity.
E is the water inlet.
F are one or more branch, or by-pass pipes connecting the water inlet with the pump tube A near its lower end.
G is a branch pipe connecting the water inlet E, the lower end of the pump cylinder B, and the by-pass pipes F.
H,IandJ area series of ball, or other equivalent valves,- opening inwardly.
K is a watertight connection between the against the packing within the box and to be of which is secured to the pump tube and the other to the pump cylinder.
N is a follower ring which is caused to bear set up against it by the adjusting screws 0.
The pump-rod P I may also make hollow as shown at Q, in addition to the hollow plunger O, in order to neutralize, to the desired extent, the weight of the pump-rod and its plunger.
Any suitable means may be employed to reciprocate the pump-rod. It may be operated by hand or bya 1ever,or by a windmill, steam engine or the like.
My invention is a force-pump when using the, hereinbefore described mechanism and the'valve R is held upon its seat. When used as a combined force and lift pump, the handle S, of the threaded rod T is turned to the left until the collars or buttons U and V are raised high enough to permit the valves R andW to work. Then when the piston is forced down the water rushes therein; and when lifted, the valves R and W close. Successive operations of the piston lift the water out of the spout X at the upper end of the movable hollow rod P, in addition to that forced up the pu mp tube A. When it is desired to use the pump solely as a force pump, the rod T is forced down against the valve R, and more or less water is imprisoned in the piston, as will balance the weight of the piston and piston rod in the submerged fluid. The amount of water in the hollow rod and piston which is retained therein for the purpose of balancing the same when used as a force pump is regulated by the rod T which, upon being elevated, raises the valves R and VV by the collars on the rod underne'ath the same, and allows sufficient water to run out to effect the proper balance, after which said rod T is depressed and the collars thereon above the valves force the valves upon their seats.
I claim- A combined force and lift pump comprising an outer stationary tube and an inner .reciprocating tube, both discharging independently, a valve rod within the reciprocating tube, a piston attached to the inner tube, a valve at the lower end of the piston and a valve at the upper end of the piston sliding upon the valve rod, stops on the valve rod to open and close the valves, and means at the upper end of the inner reciprocating tube for adjusting the valve rod. 10
