ALBERT E, BEALL, OF HUBBARD, IOWA.
U-PHOLSTERY-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,123, dated March 19,- 1895 Application filed October 10, 1894. Serial No. 525,4,87- (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. BEALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hubbard, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Upholstery- Spring, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to upholstery springs, and it has for its object to provide a new and adapted for use as a bed spring to provide a spring bed, reversible in character, while at the same time providing a light and strong bed having all the necessary spring requirements, and yet so constructed as to retain its shape under all conditions.
The invention is particularly designed as an improvement on my former patent, No. 514,898.
With these and'other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings:Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a spring bed formed with the herein described spring. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the springs.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: 1 designates an upholstery or bed spring shaped from a single continuous length of spring wire, and the length of wire forming the spring 1, is bent to form the spaced duplicate parallel V -shaped spring portions 2,
7 that are vertically disposed and are provided at their intermediate apiece, and at the extremities of their arms with the spring coils 3 -4. This construction is substantially the same as shown in my former patent hereinbefore referred to, but in the present invention the opposite portions of the wire forming the spring are extended from the upper and lower pairs of terminal spring coils 4, beyond the coil apices 3, of the V-shaped spring portions 2, to form the upper and lower horizontal U- shaped portions 5, that are of the same size and shape and therefore make the spring reversible in character, so that weight may be placed thereon from either the upper or lower side thereof.
useful spring of this character'particularly By reasonof the construction of spring described, having duplicate upper and lower horizontal portions and duplicate parallel V- shaped spring portions, it will be obvious that the spring will have considerable strength,
while at the same time yielding very readily to weight placed thereon so as to form an easy and comfortable spring for all upholstery purposes.
In using the spring, to provide a complete spring bed, the use of slats is entirely avoided on account of the wide upper and lower horizontal U-shaped portions 5, either of which portions, according to the position connected by intermediate connecting wires 6, which together with the U-shaped portions of the interlocked springs, form a fiat surface for the bed bottom composed of the connected springs. V I
While the construction of spring described, is well adapted to securethe results noted, an intermediate horizontal spring coil brace 7, is arranged between the parallel V-shaped spring portions 2, of each spring, and is secured at its opposite ends in the intermediate apex coils 3, of said spring portions, and the said spring coil brace produces a flexible coupling between the opposite side portions of the spring to prevent any side motion thereof and to provide for keeping all the parts of the spring relatively position ed or in their proper shape.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invent-ion, and at this point it is to be noted that when the herein described spring is employed in the make-up of a spring, bed bottom, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the horizontal spring coils braces 7, are made continuous and extend the entire width of the bed bottom through the aligned central or apex coils 3, of the transverse series of springs.
Having thus described theinvention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letof the transverse series of V-shaped spring to ters Patent, is portions, substantially as set forth.
In a spring bed bottom, the combination of In testimony that I claim the foregoing as a regularly arranged series of springs, each my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in 5 having a pair of parallel V-shaped portions the presence of two witnesses.
provided with spring coils at their apices, and ALBERT E. BEALL. continuous horizontal spring coil braces ar- Witnesses: ranged in parallel rows and extending con- D. C. JOHNSON,
tinuously through and fitted in the apex'coils R. A. JOHNSON.
