My invention has relation to crush-hats and among the objects in view is to overcome the inconveniences and disadvantages attending the use of the same and especially of that class of crush-hats wherein springs are employed to effect the opening of the hat and my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an interior view of a crush hat without thelining showing the mechanism in the open position. 'Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the hat seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an interior view showing the mechanism in the closed position. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention I provide knuckle-levers a, a, preferably four in number and jointed at the lower ends at k, to the ring of the hat frame, and at d, to the crown, and which, when in the open or extended position serve to distend the hat cover M. To the upper arms of the levers a, arefixed by cross links I), the sliding rods a, secured tangentially to the crank disk e, as shown, about ninety degress apart. The disk c, is, for lightness, made with segmental openings and is secured upon a central stud f, supported at the center of an arm h, secured to a'disk 0, which is sewed within and to the lining at the crown of the hat. A lever handle g, is
secured to the stud f, and is adapted to project through the lining (not shown) in position to enable it to be turned to eifect the turning of the disk 6. By turning the handle a quarter of a revolution that is to say from the position seen in Fig. 3 to that seen in Fig. 1 the rods 0, are caused to move radially outward and as the rods 0, are connected to the levers ct, levers a, are extended to effect the distending of the cover M. When the rods 0 each pass the dead point on the radialline of the crank disk, the movement is arrested by the bar h, which has its ends offset, the rods 0, abutting against the said portions of bar h, as seen plainly in Figs. 1 and 2. Thus the entire mechanism is locked in the open position.
In order to close the hat the handle g, is turned to effect the turning of the disk in the opposite direction, when the crown and brim collapse and assume the position seen in Figs. 3 and 4.
If desired, each of the levers a, may have its pivot pin m, extended to receive a coiled spring n, whose ends bear upon the arms of.
the lever in a manner to exert a stress upon the sametending to counteract the extension of the arms. This provision is to hold and maintain the parts in the closed position (Fig. 4) and prevent any sudden and unexpected expansion of the parts otherwise than by means of handle g.
Herein, as well as in many other details, modifications can be made in the parts without affecting the principle of the invention.

In acrush hat, the combination of lovers a, a, each comprising two arms jointed together, and to the hatframe at points cl, 7c, horizontal rods 0, jointed at their outer ends to the upper ends of the upper arms of the levers, a revoluble disk to which the inner ends of the rods are pivotally connected, a support for said disk a handlecarried by the pivot stud of the disk, and astop bar against which the rods 0, are adapted to abut at a certain point in the revolution of the disk, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a crush hat, the combination of levers a, a, each comprising two arms jointed together and to the hat frame'at points cl, k, horizontal rods 0, jointed at their outer ends to the upper ends of the upper arms of the levers, a revoluble disk to which the inner ends of the rods are pivotally connected, a handle carried by the pivot stud of the disk, a disk 0, secured to the crown of the hat and forming a support for thepivot stud, and a bar 71, having offset ends against which the rods 0, are adapted to abut at a certain point in the revolution of the revoluble disk, as and for the purpose specified.
