EDGAR'YATES, OF SACO, MAINE.
RElN-HO LDER FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,879, dated March 19, 1895.
Application filed November 26, 18 94- Serial No. 530,043- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR YATES, of Saco, in the county of York, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders for Harnesses, of which the following is a description sufficiently, full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation showing my improved rein holder in use on the quarter-straps of a harness, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation enlarged showing the holder, the rein being shown in cross-section.
As is well known considerable difficulty is experienced in driving, from the fact that the horse is liable to throw its tail over the reins, andparticularly when the driver uses a loose rein it is liable to catch under the whiffie-tree. My invention is designed particularly to overcome these objections and to supply a holder for the reins whereby they may be held in such position that the danger of their dropping down to the side of the horse is obviated.
In carrying out the device I make use of means which will be readily understood from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the quarter enlarged at, m, forming a head. A bolt, 9, with a flat disk-shaped head is employed for securing the holder to the quarter-strap. A suitable opening is formed in the quarter strap through which the threaded shank, p, of the bolt, g, is passed and the finger, B,- is turned onto said bolt securing it tightly to said strap and arranging it in such position that it curves vertically upward toward the back of the horse when the harness is in position.
The reins, 0, rest against the hook-shaped fingers, as shown in Fig. 1. The peculiar shape of the head, m, prevents the horses tail from becoming entangled or caught on the holder.
By the means I employ for fastening the holder it is secured firmly and rigidly on the quarter strap and is'preferably disposed some six or eight inches below the crupper-strap.
When the reins are drawn tightly it will be seen that they will readily disengage from the holder and will not interfere in any manner with proper driving.
I employ a flat spring, f, secured by one end at, t, to the hook, its free end projecting outward into engagement with the rein. This will hold the rein rigidly in place on the holder.
Any suitable projection, however, can be substituted for said spring.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- The quarter-strap, A, in combination with the metallic holder, 13, secured to said strap by the screw-bolt, g,.and the flexible projection, f, on said holder, substantially as described.
