SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent N o. 535,876, dated March 19, 1895. Application filed December '7, 1893. Serial No. 4933059 (No model.)

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES WINKLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Angelo, in the county of Tom Green and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Tag, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in tags, and especially to'that class thereof em.- ployed for marking dry-goods.

The objects of my invention are to produce a cheap and simple tag, and more particularly a convenient means for fastening the same in such position upon a bolt of goods as to prevent it from becoming twisted or turned, and so that the tag will always be held or supported so as to exhibit the markings thereon.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the hereinafter described tag and fastener.

Referring to the drawingsz-Figure l is a perspective view of one end of a bolt of goods, the same having secured thereto a tag embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional viewof the two inner laminals or layers of goods, the same having the interposed tag. Fig. 3 is a detail of the tag before applying the fastener. Fig. 4 is a detail of the fastener before bending. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tag after the application of the fastener. Fig. 6 is a reverse view of the same.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In constructing the tag I employ an oblong blank of suitable fabric or material, the same being of a stiff nature, and bend the same between its ends at l and 2, forming the intermediate portion 3 and the long and short end flaps 4 and 5 respectively. f [fhe ap 4 is folded over on the line 1 upon the intermediate portion 3, after which the short Hap 5 is folded upon the flap 4. This completes the tag, and the same may have its external surface provided with any desired printing as will be obvious.

The fastener is formed of metal and in one piece and has a general T-shape, in that it consists of the upper transverse bar 6, the opposite end-tongues 7, and the intermediate longer tongue 8, each of the tongues terminating in piercing-points. The three tongues are passed through the flaps 4 and 5 and the portion 3 of the tag, and the intermediate tongue 8 bent backward to the opposite side of the tag, so that as will be obvious we have on come fastened at each side and at the three points, hence preventing any permanent turning of the tag, and in fact any turning whateverfexcept such that may be permitted by reason of the iiexible nature of the tag. In this man ner the tag is permanently supported in position for reading, so that the marks thereon are constantly presented to the view of the salesman.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen `that I have provided a very simple and elicient tag and tag-fastener, the same being readily applied to position, secure, and always maintained in proper position.

Having described my invention, what I claim isg- 1. A tag, combined with the tag fastener, having a general T-shape,` and comprising the cross-piece 6 arranged transversely of the tag adjacent to one end thereof, the end tongues, and the intermediate tongue, all three tongues being passed through the tag, and arranged at an angle thereto, the end tongues being located at vone side of the tag and the intermediate tongue being arranged at the other side and being bent over the end of the tag and crossing the cross-piece, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The tag comprising the intermediate body-portion 3, and long and short end flaps 4 and 5 overlapping said body-portion, combined with the T-shaped fastener formed of a single piece of metal and comprising the crossbar 6, end tongues '7, and intermediate tongue 8, the three tongues being passed through the fiaps and body-portion of the tag, and the intermediate tongue being bent over upon the upper end of the tag to the opposite side thereof, substantially as specified.
