Unire raras HUGH ANDREWS, OF ANNA, ILLINOIS.
EAVES=TROU G H.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 535,656, dated March 12, 1895.
Application niet July 19,1 894. serial No. 517.991- (No model-l T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Anna, in the county of Union and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eaves-Troughs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in strainers which are adapted to be applied to eaves troughs for the purpose of arresting leaves, sticks and. dbris and prevent their admission to the discharge pipe; and it consists in providing the bottom of an eaves trough with an opening above the discharge pipe, inclined plates extending from the ends of the opening to the upper end of the discharge pipe, an opening or way in the eaves trough on a line with the strainer and an outlet pipe leading from the latter opening so that any dbris which may find its way into the trough will be discharged out of the opening or way while the water passes into the discharge pipe free of such dbris, as hereinafter more fully set forth. l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective View partly in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modiication.
A designates the eaves trough which is made up of sheet metal and is attached to the lower edge ofthe roofin the usual manner or formed as a part thereof as shown in Fig. 5.
In the drawings I have shown myinvention applied to a trough which inclines in two directions toward the discharge pipe B, and in this construction the bottom of the trough is provided above the discharge pipe with an opening beneath which are attached plates Z9 b which incline abruptly from the ends of the opening in the trough to the upper end of the discharge pipe. Above the inclined plates b b and over the opening in the bottom of the trough is attached a strainer C which is adapted to prevent sticks or other dbris passing into the discharge pipe with the water. The trough to one side of the strainer C and on a line therewith is provided with an opening or way D from which leads a discharge pipe D', so that any sticks, leaves or other dbris which may be washed into the eaves trough, or carried there by birds in building their nests, and iioated down to the strainer will be Washed through the opening or way D out of the discharge pipe D. This provides a self-cleaning trough and one that will separate impurities from the water which may be led from the discharge pipe B into a oistern.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide eaves troughs with a strainer mounted above the discharge pipe and on a line with the bottom of the trough, and I do not therefore claim such construction broadly as my invention.
It is obvious that iny invention may be applied to a great Variety of eaves troughs by providing an opening in the trough, a strainer over said opening, an inclined plate or plates beneath the strainer and an opening or way adjoining the latter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An eaves trough having an opening in the bottom thereof above the discharge pipe, a strainer secured over said opening on a line with the bottom of the trough, plates b eX- tending from the ends of the opening downwardly to the upper end of the discharge pipe, an opening D in one side of the trough on a line with the strainer and above the same, and an outlet pipe D extending from the opening D, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth. i
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUGH ANDREWS.
