My invention relates to that class of cabinets used to inclose type writing or other machines.

My invention consists in a mechanical construction by which the cap or cover revolving partially carries itself and its supporting axis backward as it is raised in front.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the cap raised and the cogs which operate the slides. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in the same position vertically and showing the cap carried backward and the side thereof cut away disclosing the cogs on the circular rear end of the cap and the toothed rack in which the cogs engage and showing the bracket which supports the axis of the cap in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the axis of the cap showing the brackets which support the cap and the groove in the bed plate in which the brackets are moved and also cogs on the ends of the sides of the cap. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cap when closed with a portion of the side cut away showing the cogs and rack in position and the supporting bracket in dotted lines.

InFig. 1 A represents the top of the cap which is curved as seen in Fig. 2. H H are the sides of the cap and B the bed plate or table upon which the cap A rests when the cabinet is closed. 0, 0,.are brackets or side supports which are provided on their bottom ends with flanged ribs which fit into and traverse dovetail grooves in the bed plate 0 0', Fig. 3. E E form the rear end of the side brackets O C.

In Fig. 2 F represents a series of cogs formed on the lower portion of the circular rear end of the side piece H of the cap A Figs. 3 and 4 and are arranged to mesh into cogs on a rack or bar G rigidly fixed to the bed plate B.

In Fig. 3 E represents the end piece of the frame inclosing the rear end of the cap A which is composed of the brackets C O and end piece E. D is the axis pin resting in the bracket 0 upon which the cap A is partially revolved.

The operation of my invention is as follows: When the cap is closed as seen in Fig. 4 and the machine which is represented by a; is inclosed the front end of the cap A is raised and as the cap revolves on theaxis pins DD the cogs F F engage in the cogs of the rack G and the pressure thus produced by the motion of the cap on the cogs moves the brackets on their slides or ribs in the grooves C G backward along with the cap until the base of the cap is in a vertical line and the cap has made the one quarter of a revolution and is carried to the rear a distance equal or nearly so to the one fourth of the circumference of the circle described by the rear end of the cap as seen in Fig. 2 thus uncovering the machine on and leaving it free for operation. By closing the cap a reverse motion of the parts is produced and the cabinet is closed.

Having thus fully described my said improvement, whatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A base or bed plate provided with grooves in the ends thereof and having a toothed rack attached to its upper surface near the end and parallel with the grooves a cap having a curved top with its rear end in circular form and having vertical sides the rear ends of which are circular and provided with cogs adapted to mesh into a toothed rack and having brackets C (J secured to the outer surfaces the bottom ends of said brackets being arranged to move laterally in the grooves of the bed plate and their upper ends provided with bearings upon which the cap is permitted a pivotal motion constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
