Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @E1-TICE.
ROBERT M. BABTLETT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO SARAH T. BABTLETT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT |N SEALING BOXES, atc.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,517, dated March 27, 1866.
To all whom 'it 'may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT M. BARTLEM,
of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Sealing Device for Boxes, etc.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, making part of' this specification.
My invention relates to a device for sealing wooden boxes, 85o., so as to protect the contents in transitu.
Figure lis a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
I take a box or case of wood or other suitable material and form in its exterior surface and entirely around it one of more grooves or channels, A A.
B are circular or other suitable depressions, indentations, or cavities located at any convenient place along the grooves A. where the ends of the tapes are brought together. C are tapes, ribbons, or any other flexible material which will serve as a band, which, beiug wound around the box so as to occupy the grooves, are secured by wax or other suitable seals. In case the ties shouldb'e made ot' sheet metal the ends may be `tacked 6r screwed fast to the box and the wax seal placed above them. Either one or two or more tapes may be employed.
The grooves A and cavities B are made of such depth as to completely contain the tape and seals, respectively, so that the external portions thereof shall be below the level of the box-surface, and thus completely protectedl I against injury by abrasion or collision in the process of transportation. The grooves A may be made very rapidly by means of a rotary cutter rising the proper distance through a bench provided with a suitable gage. The cavities B maybe made by a suitable diskcutter or by a common center-bit.
A'cheaper form of my invention may have asingle groove encompassing the box B in a transverse directiomas at A, and but one seal alone may be used, if desired.
I have selected to illustrate my invention the form adopted by me in actual use, but do not propose to restrict myself to the precise forms or materials here described, so long as the end is attained by means substantially equivalent. For example, cord or twine may take the place ofthe tape or ribbon, the grooves being sunk deeper and narrower, or for some purposes a baud of thin sheet-iron or tin-plate may be used in place of the tape, secured by a leadeu instead of a waxen seal.
I claim herein as new and ot' my inventionl. The mode or method of sealing boxes. substantially as setforth.
2. A grooved and indented packing-box, either of wood or other suitable material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In-testimony ot' which invention I hereunto set my hand.
R.. M. BARILETT.
