Be it known that I, ROBERT C. FUNKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.

The principal object of my present invention is to provide simple, durable, attractive and efficient means for securing the suspension cords of a hammock to its bed or body and to a stretcher or spreader in cases Where such a device is employed, and to this end my invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.

The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which-- Figure 1, is a view illustrating a tab projectin g from a hammock bed or body, a stretcher, a suspension cord or cords looped around the stretcher, and a radially split ring or clamp encompassing and compressing the intermediate portion of the tab and cord or cords and retaining the same by means of the looped portion of the cord or cords in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the suspension cord or cords not only looped around the stretcher but also having its ends passed through its bight. Fig. 8, is a transverse sectional view taken on a plane adjacent to the ring or clamp, and Fig. 4 is a detail illustration of the radially split ring.

In thedrawings,1, are tabs projecting from a hammock bed or body.

2, is a stretcher or spreader that maybe employed at the head or at the foot end of a hammock or at both.

3, are suspension cords that usually radiate from a suspension ring and are attached to the tabs or tags 1. According to my invention, this result is accomplished by forming a loop in the suspension cord or cords and employing a radially split ring or clamp 4, that encompasses the intermediate portion of the tab and the cord or cords and retains the same by means of the looped portion of the cord or cords which prevents the same from slipping through the radially split ring 4.

pension cords 3, are simply looped around the same, as shown in Fig. 1, or are looped around the same and have their ends passed through their bight 5, as illustrated in Fig. 2. In either case, any weight or load applied to the hammock bed or body causes the suspension cords 3, to be drawn tightly around the spreader or stretcher 2, thus tending to prevent undue slipping of the tabs or tags in respect to the same.

The construction in which use is not made of a spreader, is not claimed herein, because it is claimed in my application, Serial No. 494,284. Moreover the tab or tag may be folded or gathered around the suspension cord or cords, as shown, and this together with the bright metallic appearance of the radially split rings 4, imparts a neat and attractive finish to the hammock and also materiallyincreases the strength and durability of the same.

Having thus described the nature and object of my present invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In combination, a looped suspension cord attached to and radiating from a suspension ring, gathered tabs projecting from the end of a hammock body and through which the respective loops of the cord pass, bands encompassing and compressing the intermediate portions of the tabs onto and around the looped cords, and a stretcher passed through the end portions of the looped cords whereby it is held to place and the cords are prevented from pulling through the gathered tabs, substantially as described.

2. In combination, a looped suspension cord attached to and radiating from a suspension ring, gathered tabs projecting from the end of a hammock body and through which the respective looped cords pass, bands encompassing and compressing the intermediate portions of the tabs onto and around the looped cords, and astretcher around which the looped cords pass through their bights, substantially as described.
