J. JANKOWSKI.
GOMBINED BED AND SOFA.
A'T ORNEW JOSEPH JANKOWSKI, or
PATENT Enron.
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED BED AND SOFA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 534,332, dated February 19, 1895.
Application filed March 30, 1894- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J ANKOWSKI, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bed and Sofa, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to that class of sofas which are transformable into beds, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and readily operative device of this character, which may he used as a sofa when desired, and at one movementbe immediately resolved into a bedstead, and in which the back of the sofa may also be utilized and the upper portion thereof be employed as a pillow or bols er.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view in illustration of my invention, showing the rear thereof, when closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device when opened out into a bed.
In the practice of myinvention I construct an oblong, rectangular body A resting on legs A and-to which is hinged at a, a body B, which serves as the back of the sofa when the device is closed up. This body is formed in two sections B, B, hinged together at b. The section B has journaled thereon at c, an outer frame 0, having a rod cl near the bottom thereof. This rod extends through slots 6 in the frame of the body B.
At'the rear of the device is a leverfdepending from the rod cl, running through the socket f and pivotally connected to a brace g at the bottom of the body A.
In front of the body'A when the device is open, and above the same when closed, is a body D connected to the said bodyA at each side by segmental arms h pivoted at h and h respectively. This bodyD has the side pieces D, which serve as the arms of the sofa, and is also supported by the flange 'i when the device is opened as shown in Fig. 3. The body D is connected to the body B by means of a Serial'Nol 505.667. (No model.)
joint j pivoted to the arm h atj and atj to a shoulder is projecting downwardly from the body B.
The operation of the device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings. The body D being lifted 0E from the body A, depresses by means of the arm 72. and the jointj, the body B, causing the same to assume a horizontal position, and at the same time the lever fforces the rod (1 upward or rearward, thereby causing the frame 0 to assume an upright position, elevating the section B of the body B to an oblique position, as shown in Fig. 3. The said frame G thus also forms a support for the head of the bed.
When it is desired to return the bed to the shape of a sofa, an exactly converse movement of the parts is made-that is, the body D is raised, or lifted upon, the body A, the body B being thereby elevated to form the sofa-back, and the section B and the frame 0 re-assume their normal position.
It will be understood that each of the bodies A, B and D is formed of a rigid frame and a flexible, yielding, inner portion as in all upholstered sofas or lounges. This insures asurface for the bed in the stead of a mattress.
The advantages resultant from the use of my invention will be obvious, since it pro- Vides a device forming a large roomy bed during the sleeping hours and at all other times occupies but little space and forms a valuable and ornamental article of furniture useful in every household.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A combined bed and sofa comprising a lower body, an upper body resting normally thereon, a rear body formed in sections hinged together, a support having connections with both of said sections, and connections between the lower body and the support whereby the latter may be operatedto raise a section of the rear body.
2. A combined bedstead and sofa comprising a lower body, an upper body normally rest ing thereon, a rear body'formed in sections, a frame on one of said rear-body-sections, connections between said upper and rear bodies whereby the latter may be lowered when the former is removed from its normal position and connections between the said lower body and the rear body frame whereby the latter may be simultaneously operated to elevate a section of the rear body and form a support therefor.
3. A combined bed and sofa comprising a lower body, an upper body normally resting thereon, a link connecting said upper and lower bodies, a rear body hinged to the lower body, and a second link pivoted to the aforesaid link and to the rear body, whereby said upper body may be slidably moved from the lower body and may simultaneously lower the said rear body, said upper body maintaining an upright position.
4. A combined bed and sofa comprising a lower body, an upper body resting normally thereon, a lever connecting said upper and lower bodies, a rear body formed of sections hinged together and connected to the lower body, a link pivoted at the work point to said lever and to the rear body, whereby said upper body may be removed slidably from the lower body and may act to lower the rear body, and a support for the rear body connected to both sections thereof, and connec tions between the said support and the lower body whereby the former may be operated to raise a section of the rear body.
5. A combined bed and sofa comprising a lower body, an upper body normally resting thereon, a rear body formed in sections, one of said sections having an extension to receive an adjacent section of the body, a support hinged to the outer section and having slidable connection with the other of said sections, and connections between the lower body and the support to operate the latter.
6. A combined bed and sofa comprising a lower body, an upper body resting normally thereon, a rear body formed in sections, one of said sections having an extension to receive the adjacent section normally, a support for the rear body having connections with the said sections thereof, and connections between the support and the lower body whereby the support may be operated to elevate a portion of the rear body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of March,
JOSEPH JAN KOWSKI. W'itnesses:
PERCY T. GRIFFITH, G. GERST.
