.0. T. HOWARD. WIRE STRETGHER AND STAPLE PULLER.
(No Model.)
Patented Feb. 12, 1895.
INVENTOR- W/T/VESSES.
1? QM-m ATTORNEY.
NITED STAT S CHARLES T HOWARD,'OF SYHENANDOAH, IOWA.
WlRE-STRETCHER AND STAPLE-FULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,105, dated February 12, 1 895. Application filed April 26, 1894. Serial N01 509,163. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. HOWARD, of Shenandoah, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and 5 useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers and Staple-Pullers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel improved article of manufacture and comprises a tool more particularly adapted to be used in repairing and mending wire fences.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a side view of a tool embodying my invention, partly in section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the staple puller, while Fig. 3 shows an end view of the clawhammer as used and arranged in my invention.
The invention comprises, essentially, the ordinary claw hammer, A, which, however, is provided with a threaded stem, 2, and in addition has two cleats; one being a simple sidewardlyextending cleat, 3, and the other a double cleat, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This threaded end of the hammer is adapted to screwinto a suitable box or housing, 6, having its free end threaded, and within which housing nails and staples can be held. This housing is provided at its remaining end with an improved staple puller which has an extending nosing of diminishing proportions, as shown by 9. This staple puller is preferably .of cast metal and is wedged within the staple housing, 6. Upon one side this staple puller is further provided with a projecting chisel, 5, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. Now, in putting up afence it is often neccesary to out the wire, which can be readily accomplished by means of my device as the chisel part can be held by'means of the staple housing and be operated by means of the hammer, A. So, also, in removing ordinary staples it is simply necessary to force the nosing, 9, into the staple and by using the hammer, A, as a lever the staple can be readilyremoved. Further,in tighteningthewires the same is simply slipped under the simple cleat, 3, and then wound once upon the duplex cleat, 4, which gives the operator a good purchase on the wire, and he can stretch the same by forcing the heel or nosing of the staple puller, 9, into a suitable base and so give a proper leverage in stretching the wire.
The device is simple of construction, and now Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
' The combination, with a suitable claw hammer provided with a threaded end, of a simple cleat extending from the handle portion of said hammer, a duplex cleat at right angles to said simple cleat and removed therefrom at a distance of approximately ninety degrees, a suitable staple housing fitting upon the threaded end of saidhammer handle and being adapted to provide a staple receptacle, and a staple puller secured to said staplehousing provided with an extending nosing of diminishing proportions, and provided at one point with a projecting integral chisel, all ar ranged substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES T. I-IOW'ARD. Witnesses:
HAMILTON P. DUFFIELD, J. W. Tno'r'rns.
