FFQE@ `LOIIIS RUHE, OF NEW YORK, N; Y.
. AQUARIUM.
SPVEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,052, dated February 12, 1895.
Application filed October 31,1894. Serial No. 627,559. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, LOUIS RUHE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certaind new and useful Improvements in Aquariums, of which the following 'is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved aquarium of that class in which the base-portion and side-plates of the same can be detached fromeach other so as to be shipped in sop-called knock-down position, the partsbeing readily connected again when the aquarium is to be put up for use, and being then tightly connected at their meeting-edges, so as to provide water-tight joints and prevent any leakage of water from the-same; and the invention con-` sists of an aquarium, composed of a base-portion and glass side plates, metallic anglestrips attached to the meeting-edges of the side-plates with each other and to the bottom edges, bolts for connecting together the anglestrips of the meeting-edges of the side-plates and for connecting with the base-portion the bottom angle strips of the sideplates, and elastic packing-strips interposed between the outwardly extending lian ges of the anglestrips, and between the main portions of the angle-Strips and the inner faces of the side.- plates and bottom, by which the water-tight connection of the bottom with the side-plates and of the side-plates with each other, is ob-. tained, as willbe fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved aquarium. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a horizontal and a vertical section on an enlarged scale, on lines 3, 3, and 4C, 4, Fig. 1, taken respectively through the side-plates and bottom of the aquarium.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base or bottom of my improved aquarium,
which is preferably formed of metal or othersuitable material, and supported on feet a. The glass side-plates C, C, are connected with the base A and with each other by means of metallic angle-strips D E which are applied to the meeting-edges of the side-walls and base and of the side-plates- The side-plates.
C are made of glass of suitable thickness, the angle-strips being folded and made of corresponding size, and bent at their folded edges in outward direction, while the outwardly-ex'- tending portions or flanges'E formed by foldbolts e? passing tightly through holes drilled, through the glass side-plates, so that the angle-strips are rigidly connected with each other and with the side plates, as clearly shown in detail in Fig. 3. The bottom strips D are also doubled and attached by means composed of main'portions D and ange portions 'D2 which extend at' right angles to the main portions, while bolts dpass through the main portions D and the side-plates and bolts d pass through the flanges D2 and the base A, as shown in Fig. 4. v
For the purpose of producing the tight connection of the angle-strips D E with the base A and side-plates C of the aquarium, elastic packing-strips f' are interposed between the outwardly-extending flange-portions of the angle-stripsE and similar elastic strips f be` tween the main-portions of the same and the side-plates, while washers are arranged at the points where the bolts pass through the sideplates of the aquarium. Similar packingstrips f2 are interposed between the main-por tions D', of bottom-strips D and the glass plates, and between the flanges of the bottomstrips and the base A, as shown in Fig. 4. By the packing-strips the perfectly tight-fitting of the different parts is obtained.
The water-tight connection of the base with the bottom-strips, and of the side-plates with the corner-strips is obtained when the indi vidual parts of the aquarium are secured together, while the bolt connection of the parts permits the ready detaching of the parts so as to pack them into a comparatively small space for shipment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patente-- 1. An aquarium, composed of a base-portion, side-plates, metallic angle-strips connecting the side-plates with the bottom, metallic angle-strips attached to the meetingedges of the side-plates and provided with outwardly-extending flanges, and packingstrips interposed between the angle-strips and the base-portion, the side-plates and the angie-strips at the meeting-edges, and the ontwardly-extending flanges of the angie-strips at the corners, substantially as set forth.
2. An aquarium, composed of a base-portion, metallic angle-strips connecting the sideplates with the base-portion side-plates, angle-strips provided with eyes and bolted to said side plates, said angle-strips being provided with outwardly extending tlanges, bolts for connecting the outwardly-extending anges of the angle-strips, and packing-strips interposed between the main portions of the angle-strps and the sideplates, and between the base-portion and to the side-plates, subj stantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS RUHE.
