M ETALLIC SEAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,023, dated February 12, 1895. Application filed November 15, 1894:. Serial No. 528,914. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN A. VU'RGAso'N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Como, in the county of Putnam and State of Florida, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Metallic Seals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in metallic seals and it consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of the same, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The annexed drawings to which reference is made fully illustrates my invention, in which- Figure 1, represents an envelope showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of plate a. Fig. 3, is a face view of the plate b. Fig. 4, is an edge view of the same. Fig. 5, is a face View showing the plates attached together. Fig. 6, is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional View of the same.
Referringby letter to the accompanying drawings A designates the metallic seal, which comprises two parts a and b. The portion a consists of a plate 0, which is provided with prongs (1 formed integral therewith and bent at right angles thereto. The portion 1) also consists of a plate, but somewhat larger in size than the plate a and the same is provided with lips or flanges e on the under side thereof and formed integral withsaid plate. These flanges or lips are formed in pairs, the same being stamped out of said plate and are slightly inclined toward one another for a purpose presently explained.
It will be observed that I'use with or 001m bine with the plate or. having the prongs, a peculiarly constructed plate b, and which is more particularly designed for sealing envelopes and packets whereby a person is prevented from tampering with the same.
In sealing a letter or packet or other article that this device may be used with, the prongs of the plate a are passed through the same,
outwardly and then bent sufficiently inwardly and toward the said plate, leaving a slight space between the inner face of the bent prongs and the envelope, after which the plate b is laid upon the prongs with each pair of lips or flanges adjacent or straddling the prong, after which said plate 11 is given a blow or pressure, thereby causing the in'-' clined lips to flatten, moving toward one another andpassing under the prongs, the latter being held firmly between the plate I) and the envelope. It will be further seen that in sealing the envelope, the blow or pressure causes the plate a to leave an impression upon a letter or contents thereof and should any one succeed in breaking the seal and re-sealing the envelopethere would be, instead of the original impression a second impression which would readily indicate that the envelope had been tampered with.. I
Letters, figures or any suitable design may be formed upon the plate a if desired, which will more readily cause an impression upon the letter or other contents of the envelope or packet, as the impression is made after the envelope is closed, by pressure or a blow upon the plate b, and a device as herein described is simple in construction, durable and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In combination, the plate or provided with the prongs bent at right angles thereto and the flat plate I) having the inclined lips arranged in pairs and adapted to engage the prongs of the plate a whereby the two plates are locked together when pressure is brought to bear upon said plates substantially as described.
2. In combination with the plate at having the prongs d of the flat plate I) provided with the inclined lips 6 arranged in pairs and stamped out of the plate a whereby said plate and lips are formed integral, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NATHAN A. VURGASON.
