UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
VILLIAM G. ADAMS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER WEIGHT AND CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,980, dated February 12, 18 95.
Application filed June 16,1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
3e it'known that I, WILLIAM G. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and ters of reference marked thereon, which forms a partof this specification. I
This invention relates to weights for retaining sheets of paper in place upon a flat surface and its object is to provide an article possessing at once the properties of an ordinary paper-weight with the added advantages of a clip.
The device consists essentially of superimposed heavy leaves loosely encircling a central stem rising from and attached to a base plate.
The drawingrepresents a sectional view of my paper weight and clip.
A is the base plate, the under surface of which isplane or slightly concave and the upper surface curving in every direction from lower points at the outer edge of the plate to- -ward higher points at or within any desired distance radially measured about the central stem.
B, O, D, are the superimposed clipping disks or leaves. They are practicallysimilar, although the resemblance is not necessarily absolute, and each possesses a central orifice of such diameter as will permit one side of a leaf to be raised above the opposite side while said leaf is in position with the stem passing through the central orifice. The upper and lower surfaces of said leaves are convex and curve equally or in. any, desired rela tion to each other meeting at an outeredge or boundary line of the leaf. Each leaf may possess an upper and lower flat area about the central orifice, and the convergent surfaces may commence from the outward line of said flat portions.
The above construction affords the wedge shaped openings 13, G, H, extending entirely Serial No. 514,715. (No model.)
around the invention and each adapted to receive papers inserted from any side.
E, is the central stem, screw-threaded and let into the base plate, or held in its place by a screw from below. Obviously, the base plate and stem may be cast in one piece, and the head of the stem screwed on in the common way. The stem may be cylindrical although the preferred construction is a square crosssection, preventing the unnecessary turning of the leaves when the device is in use. The shape of the head of the stem and 'the outer contour of the base and leaves, whether circular or polygonal, are matters of taste, merely, having no bearing upon the merits of this application.
I may prefer to construct a heavy base, A, and fashion the leaves of wood, glass or any chosen material, and then supply their lack of weight by a spring re-acting upon the head of the stem. The action in any case is the same, and, as will be readily understood, pa pers can be'thrustsingly or together from any side into and held by my invention; such service being rendered in addition to its use as a paper-weight.
Having thus sufficiently described my in vention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States,is
1. In a paper weight and clip, a base plate having a lower flat or slightly concave surface, an upper convex surface from which projects a centrally located stem, said stein loosely-encircled by successive leaves provided with upper and lower convex surfaces and adapted to bear upon the said base plate and upon each other, all substantially as shown and described for the purposes specified.
2. In a paper weight and clip, the planoconvex base plate, A, provided with centrally located stem, E, preferably of square or po-' lygonal cross-section, loosely encircled by double convex leaves B, C, D, as shown and described for the purposes set forth. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
