SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,939, dated February 12, 1895. Application led April 18, 1894. Serial No. 508,050. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, DAMEL S. WING, acitizen of y,the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Delaware and 'State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates more particularly, though not necessarily, to that class of packing boxes which are designed to contain interior packages, as of cans of milk and cream, and which it may be desirable to ship and return may times, and the object of the invention is, first, to more eectually than heretofore insure that the consignes shall receive the contents of the-package in their original purity, as ofv milk, medicines, liquors, &c., and,

second, to also insure so far as practicable against the breakage in transportation of such glassware as may be contained within the packing box.

' a designates the walls of thebox and b, its cover, the edges of which maybe rabbeted as shown, or cleatsmay be attached thereto, so that the cover will lit in the interior of the box at the top. That portion of the cover b, which is wit-hin the box when closed, is perforated horizontally, as seen at o, to receive a locking rod as hereinafter set forth.

In the front wall of the box, near the top, is arecess g,and a horizontal keyhole h, and in the rear wall, opposite said key hole, is an inner recess or socket lo, to receive the end through the key hole h, and through the perforation o, in the cover b, into the socket lo, in the rear wall, the key-hole being long enough to admit the arm cl.v The rod c may thenbe turned, the outer arm e serving as a as seen in Fig. l.

handle,` so that the arms d and e extend downward, the arm d being within and close against the front wall of the box, and' the arm e being within the recess g, which surrounds the keyhole, and against the outside of said wall, Thus the cover is securely held in place and the rod c is prevented from displacement by jarring or moving of the box.

over the edge of the cover b, and over the arm e, and is designed to prevent the removal of the cover, o r the withdrawing of the rod c, without first destroying the seal or label.

I do not claim as myinvention any label or seal or the use of any label or seal in any general sense, neither do I wish to confine my invention to any particular material of which the packing box shall be made; but

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with the body of a box, provided with a key-hole h, in its front wall, and an inner socket k, in its rear wall, of a cover which extends into said box and is perforated horizontally, and a locking rod c, proconstructed that-when the box is closed, the

vsaid rod may be passed through the said keyhole and the perforation in said cover, ,into the socket lo, and then turned so as to bring the arms cl, and e, to vertical positions, one

on the inner side of said front wall and the other on the outside, after which the outer` arm may be covered with a seal or label, all v as herein set forth and described.
