UNITED STATES PATENT @FFME MATTHEW J. YVHITTALL, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
WOVEN CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,690, dated February 5, 1895.
Application filed March 28, 1894. Serial No. 505,482. (Specimens) To wZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW J. WHITTALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Voven Carpets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of carpets which are woven with a backing or filling, and with a wearing surface or body formed of worsted or other suitable material.
The ordinary forms of this class of carpets are known as Brussels, Wilton and Moquette carpets, which differ among themselves merely in the manner of forming the face or body portion, all being woven with a suitable backing 0r filling.
My invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a piece of carpet constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one of the strands or threads which I employ in forming the backing or filling for my carpet.
The present practice in weaving carpets, is to form the filling or backing of twisted or spun strands of cotton or linen. After the linen or cotton strands for the backing are spun or twisted, they are sized or stiifened by being drawn through a bath of any suitable glue or stiffening material.
On account of unevenness in spinning or twisting the strands, and on account of the uneven swelling of the fibers in the sizing or stiffening process, the strands which are ordinarily employed to form the filling for carpets have been found to vary to a considerable extent in diameter or cross-section.
The object of my invention is therefore to provide a carpet having a fibrous wearing surface and a backing formed of strands or threads which will be nearly uniform in crosssection, and which will not require sizing or stifiening before weavin Referring to the drawings, a designates the weft or woof threads, and b designates the warp threads, forming the backing or filling for my carpet, and c designates the worsted or other material, which forms the wearing surface or body of the carpet.
The threads or strands a and b of my improved carpet are formed of twisted paper,
as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, and I have found that by tightly twisting or spinning strips of paper, that a thread or strand may be produced, which is nearly uniform in cross section, and which, when woven to form the filling for a carpet, will form a nearly perfect geometric background upon which the design or figures of the body of the carpet can be woven with the utmost accuracy, and which will entirely do away with the processes of sizing or stiffening, as heretofore employed.
It is further to be noted that, as paper is not attacked by moths, I have provided a backing for carpets, which will not afford them a harbor or breeding place.
Ifpreferred, instead of making both the warp and weft threads out of strands of paper, I may form the parallel strands or threads, which run in one direction, of twisted paper, and may use some other material for the remaining threads of the backing, such a construction being clearly within the scope of my invention.
I am aware that it has been heretofore proposed to weave a fabric having a face or wearing surface formed of twisted paper, and I do not claim such as my invention, but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a woven carpet or fabric, the combina tion of a backing comprising parallel strands or threads formed of twisted strips of paper, and a body portion or wearing surface interwoven with said backing, and formed of woolen or other similar material, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\ M. .T. VVHITTALL.
