lily invention relates to an improvement in pails and more particularly to an improved device to facilitate the emptying of the contents of a sirup pail.

As constructed, sirup chine pails are made with bung holes in their heads and such holes must be some distance from the staves in order that the top or head of the pail be not weakened as the bungs are driven with considerable force. As hung holes are about one web from the edge of the pail, when sirup is poured through said hole, the top of the pail will be left in a sticky or dirty condition. To avoid this obj eetion and the consequent loss of sirup, is the object of my invention.

A further object is to produce a spout for a sirup pail, by means of which sirup can be poured from the pail without soiling the pail or wasting the sirup and to so construct said spout that it shall be simple in construction and efficient in the performance of its functions. 7

A further object is to connect a spout to a sirup pail in such manner that it can be so ad- Justed as to permit the stacking of the pails.

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth and pointed'out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure is a view illustrating the application of my improved spout to a pail, showing the position of the spout when in use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the position of the spout to permit the stacking of the pails.

A represents a pail, the top or head a of which is located somewhat below the upper edge of the wall of the pail, and the bottom of the pail is located somewhat above the lower edge of the wall thereof, as usual In the top of the pail, a hung hole I) is made, said hung hole being so located that its nearest point to the edge of the pail will be about one inch. To thetop or head a of thepail, a block or spout B is pivotally connected, the free end of said block or spout being beveled and slightly rounded to conform to the contour of the edge of the pail with which it is adapted to align when in use. The block or spout B is made with a hole or perforation 0 adapted, when the device is in use, to align with the bung hole I). The block or spoutB is made inits top with a channel or gutter at extending from the hole or perforation c to or nearly to the free end of the said block or spout, said channel or gutter being made of same width and depth where it communicates with the perforation c, and at its outer end the walls of said channel meet,or in other words said channel is about the shape of one-half of a cone. 7

When the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1 it is evident that the sirup can be readily poured from the pail without danger of soiling the pailor wasting the sirup.

Vv'hen the spout or block is swung around as shown in Fig. 2, the pails maybe stacked one upon another, which is very necessary in transporting them.

It is not necessary that the block or spout be swung to a central position on the top of the pail, it being only necessary to swing it sufliciently far to permit the insertion of the bung and the admission ofthe bottom edge of one pail on the top of the next lower.

My improvements are very simple in construction and effectual, in all respects, in the performance of its functions.

Slight changes might be made in the detaus of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth, nor do I wish to limit myself to the use of said spout on sirup pails only, as the said spout may he applied to pails for any purpose.
