GEORGE CLAY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOSHUA R. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED ALBUM AND BIBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,437, dated February 5, 1895.
Application I'iled October 30. 1894. Serial No. 527,434. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE CLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Album and Bible, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my present invention is .to provide a combined Bible and photograph album in which the beauty, strength and durability of the Bible binding and of the Bible as a whole are not materially lessened or otherwise interfered with, while at the same time album leaves are provided which may be wholly concealed within the cover of the Bible and which may be opened out for inspection and for the insertion and removal of pictures, the whole device providing not only a convenient place of record for births, marriages, deaths and other important events of family history but also for preserving likenesses of deceased and other members or friends of the family which it is often desirable to conceal from public observation and view, and to this end my invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying1 drawings forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a combined Bible and album embodying features of my invention, and Figs. 2, 3, et and 5, are transverse sectional views respectively illustrating combined Bibles and albums embodying modifications of my invention.
In the example of my invention illustrated in the drawings, 1, is a cover bound or attached to a Bible or other book 2, and having its front or outer and end edges 3, 4 and 5, intact so as to preserve the appearance and strength of the cover.
in the present instance of the cover 1, is recessed 0r hollowed out to form a compartment. 7, are album leaves provided with picture openings or with spaces for the reception of inscriptions and adapted for concealment or insertion in the above mentioned compart- The center portion 6,
ment 6, and to be opened out for inspection and use.
8, is a shield or screen for preserving the continuity of theappearance of the Bible when 5 5 the cover 1, is open and for concealing album leaves when the latter are not in use and are stored in the compartment 6. Obviously the above mentioned parts may be combined and arranged for operation in the manner above 6o described in a variety of ways of which several examples are illustrated in the drawings.
In Fig. 1, ways, channels or grooves 9, are cut or otherwise formed at the inner faces of the front and end edges 3, 4 and 5 of the cover 65 and the screen or shield 8, is provided with flanges 10, adapted to these ways, grooves or channels so that the shield or screen may be drawn toward the right as shown in said iigure to permit of the opening of the leaves 7, 7o which are hinged to the cover 1, for example, at 11. Obviously the leaves may be folded into the compartment 6, and the shield or screen 8, push ed toward the left in which position it completely conceals the leaves 7, and 7 5 provides for the continuity of the appearance of the interior of the cover l, of the Bible.
12, are stop pins that may be applied so as to depend from the under side of the shield or screen 8, into position for colliding with a 8o projection on the inner edge of the cover 1, and in such case, the shield may not be detached from the cover.
Referring to Fig. 2, the shield or screen 8, is hinged to the inner edge of the cover 1, and is adapted to be turned on its hinge into the position shown in order to permit of the opening and inspection of the leaves 7, which are hinged to the cover 1, either as shown or at 13, as preferred. 9o
` 14:, is a catch that may be provided for retaining the shield or screen 8a, in closed positionfor concealing the leaves 7, and for preserving the continuity of the appearance of the cover 1. 9 5
The construction shown in Fig. 3, is the same as that shown in Fig. 2, with the exception that the leaves '7, are hinged to the free end of the screen 8".
In Fig. 4, the end edges of the cover are roo" Ypins 17, may Anot escape therefrom. The waysk side edges of the shield or screen 8b, are provided with pins 17, that work in the Ways, grooves orchannels l5, and with flanges 18, adapted for insertion in and removal from the ways, grooves or channels 16. The ways 15, are closed at their inner ends so that the 16, are open at their inner ends and the flanges 18, are cut away as at 19, for purposes to be presently described. The shield or screen 8b, may be drawn toward the right as indicated by dotted lines in said figure in which position the pins 17, are arrested at the ends of the grooves 15. However, since the flanges 18, are cut away at 19, they are clear of the grooves 16, so that the shield or screen 8b,
may be turned as indicated in full lines to afford access to the leaves 7, which are hinged to its under side. However, this shield or screen 8b, when it is pushed from the position indicated in dotted lines toward the' left serves to'conceal the leaves and to preserve the continuity "of theappearance of the cover 1.
In Fig. 5, the shield or screen SC, is fformed. integral with o'r attached to the cover 1,`in such manner that an opening is provided near theinner edge of the cover forthe reception of a carrier or back 20, to which the leaves 7, are attached. The leaves 7, may be folded onto the `carrier 20, and the latter pushed to- Ward the leftin which case the shield or screen 8, conceals the leaves and preserves the'continuity of the appearance of the cover 1.
2l, are stop pins which may be employed to prevent accidental detachment of the carrier 20.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence 'I do dot limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of details hereinabove set forth and illustrated inthe drawings, but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my present invention, what I claim as new,`and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined album and Bible comprising, a cover bound to a Bible and recessed to form 5o acompartment adjacent to the leaves, and album leaves hinged together and hinged to swing for concealment in said compartment and for use, substantially as described.
2. A/combined album and Bible comprising, a cover bound to a Bible and having its front and end edges intact and having its center portion recessed to form a compartment, and an album having its leaves hinged together and hinged'to swing for concealment in said 6o compartment and for use, substantially as described. y
3."A combined album and Bible comprising, a cover bound to a Bibleand `recessed to form a compartment completely inclosed within the bookadjacent toits leaves, album leaves hinged together and to said cover and adapted to be assembled in and opened out of said compartment, and a movable shield or screen for concealing said leaves, substantially as 7o described. l
4. A combined album and Bible comprising, a cover bound to a Bible and having its front and end edges intact and having the center portion of its inner face recessed to form a compartment adjacent to the leaves, album leaves hinged together and hinged to swing in saidcomp'artment and for use, and. a shield or screen yadapted to Ways 'cut ory otherwise formed at the inner'faces of the front and 8o end edges, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
GEORGE CLAY.
