Be it known that I, C ARLES-HARVEY Lrr- TLE, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved adjustable latch for gates.

My object is to provideasimple and cheap article, adapted to be attached directly to the post by nails or screws. It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, represents a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2, is a side elevation; Fig. 3, a transverse section on line a:a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, is a plan view.

In the figures A represents a metal plate, having a dove-tail slot in the center open at one end to admit the spline of the latch. This is shown at b. It is on the back of the plate 0 which is arranged to slide on the plate A. On the upper end of the movable plate 0 is a horizontal stud a cast on the upper end of the plate 0 which, in the form shown, is rounded oneach side, and provided with strengthen- .ings ribs 6 e, which form a supporting bracket for the stud. In thelower end of the movable plate 0, is a hole, for the reception of a threaded bolt f, the head of which fits in the dovetail groove, below the lower end of the dovetail spline. A thumb nut is provided on the outer end of the bolt, by turning which the head may be jammed in the groove and the plate 0, held in place. Reverse move- 55 ment of the nut loosens the plate and allows the latch stud d to set at any required height.

This construction permits of the accurate adjustment of the stud, either when it is first set or to accommodate it to any sagging of the gate.

The parts may be made very cheaply of malleable iron. Suitable holes m are made in the slotted plate for the nails or screws.
