H. A. J. RIEOKERT. KNOGYKDOWN FURNITURE.
lNVE/VTUH v Patented Jan, 29, 1895.
WITNESSES:-
4 TTOHNEYS.
HERMAN A. J. RIEOKERT, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
KNOCKDQWN FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofv Letters Patent No. 533,320, dated January 29,1895.
Application filed October 12, 1 894.
T0 00% whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, HERMAN A. J. RIECKERT, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Furniture, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to knock-down furniture, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States No. 473,783, granted to me on April 16, 1892.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved counter more especially designed for temporary use in stores, on sidewalks, &c., to permit of conveniently displaying alarge quantity of merchandise, samples or other articles; the counter being arranged to permit of conveniently folding, for storing or transportation purposes.
The invention consists principally of a top made in sections hinged together, and a support connected by hinges with one end of the sections of the said top, the said support being provided with a back and sides, hinged thereto and adapted to be folded thereon.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same as folded. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. is an inverted plan view of part of the same; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same, on the line 5-5 of Figs. 3 and 4.
The improved article of knock-down furniture is provided with a top A made in two sections A and A connected with each other by hinges B so that the upper surfaces of the two sections fold one on the other when the sections are closed, as is illustrated in Fig. 2.
The top is preferably made with side pieces and slats, as illustrated in the drawings, and the said top is preferably held in an inclined position, and the free end of the section A is formed with a projection or resting foot SerialNo. 525,662. (No model.)
A to prevent the goods, merchandise or other articles from accidentally falling off the top. The two sections A and A are preferably of the same width, so that when folded one on the other, they present one solid body, as indicated in Fig. 2.
The under side of the section A is con nected at or near the middle thereof, by hinges O with a back D extending the length of the top A, and connected at its outer ends by hinges E with the two sides F and F adapted to be folded on the back D, as illustrated in Fig. 2, or extended at right angles therefrom, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3.
The top rails F and F of the sides'F and F respectively, are preferably inclined, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 so that the said top rails'when extended, support the top A in an inclined position, as previously mentioned, it being understood that about one half of the upper section A and the principal portion of the lower section A rests on the said inclined rails F and F as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 3.
In order to securely hold the sides F and F in an extended position to properly support the top A, I provide the under side of the section A with lugs or projections A adapted to abut the faces of the top rails F and F of the sides F and F respectively, so that the latter are prevented from closing accidentally at the time the top is extended and rests on the said sides F and F. See Figs. 4c and 5. In order to lock the top A positively in position on the sides F and F, I provide each of the latter with a hook G adapted to engage a staple G secured to the under side of the section A, at or near the joint connecting the section A with thesection A.
Now, it will be seen that by the arrangement described, the sides F and F can be readily folded onto the front face of the b ack D, and the section A of the top A can be folded with its upper face onto the upper face of the section A and then the two folded sections A and A can be swung downward, so as to rest against the rear face of the back D, as indicated in Fig. 2.
In order to conveniently fold the sides F and F onto the front face of the back D, I
make the outer end of the back D at which the side F is hinged, double the thickness, as
at D, of that of the outer side on which the be seen that the counter described, can be very cheaply manufactured and can be readily set up in stores, on the sidewalks and other places for displaying goods to the greatest advantage.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a knock-down counter or the like, the combination of a back having end pieces of unequal thickness, the sides hinged to said end pieces of the back and correspondingin thickness to the difference in thickness of the said end pieces, and a top composed of two sections, one of which is hinged to the end pieces of the back and provided with hooks adapted to look its forward edge to the sides, the other section being hinged to said first named section at one edge and having at its opposite edge means for securing it to the sides, substantially as set forth.
