SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,340, dated January 19, 1892.

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN CHIC/BESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.

My invention relates to folding chairs; and it consists of the novel arrangement of the parts particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in my specification and claim; and the object of my invention is to increase the strength, simplicity, and efficiency of the class of chairs to which it relates.

My'device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my chair, showing the parts in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the parts folded together in position for convenient transportation or storage. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of that portion of the chair below the seat, showing the parts in position for use and havingaportion of one leg broken away to better show the relation of the parts. Fig. t is an enlarged side view of one leg and the upright support abutting againstit, having a portion of the leg broken away to better show the slot-and-pin connection between them; and Fig. 5 is a transverse plan view of that portion of the leg containing a recess engaging with the slot being shown by dotted lines.

der formed at a', is recessed at f, and has a plate E, adapted to cover the recess f and shoulder a. This plate E has in its center, running from near the bottom upward to the shoulder, a slot c, narrow enough to engage and confine the head of the pin or stud F and wide enough to permit the free upward and downward play of the pin below its head, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 4. Toward the lower part of the plate F. the slot may be enlarged, as at e', to admit the head of the pin F in case it is desired to put the plate in place before'the insertion of the pin. Otherwise the enlargement of the slot e at any point is unnecessary. The pin F is securely fastened to the upright brace D, which is pivoted at its lowerend to the leg C at d and is shaped at the top at cl to abut against the shoulder a when the chair is in use. This construction gives the strength and security of a direct thrust upon the shoulder a', and the brace is held firmly in place by the engaging of the head of the pin F within the slot e of the plate E. Vhen the chairis folded, as shown in Fig. 2, F drops toward the bottom of the slot c; but c should be below the lowest point reached by F in folding the chair, so that D may not become disconnected from A by the accidental disengagement of the pin F from the slot at e.

An arm of the ordinary sort may be used without in anyway affecting the character of my invention.

If it is deemed necessary in order to stiften the chair, rungs may be inserted between A A and C C near the bottom of the chair.
