T.A.OLARKE. FOLDING STAND.
No. 513,304. Patented Jan. 23, 1894.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. CLARKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,304, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed April 20, 1893. I Serial No. 471,098- (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. CLARKE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Furniture, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and useful improvement in folding furniture, which is simple and durable in construction, more especially designed for use as a table or stand, and arranged to be conveniently set up or knocked down, or folded for conveniently storing it in a limited space.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed ou in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve- Fig. 2 is a plan ment, with parts in section. view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same as folded and with parts in section. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is aside elevation of a modifled form of the improvement; and Fig. 7 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
The improved piece of folding furniture is provided with a post A formed at'its lower end with a head A ,from which extends do wuward an extension A as is plainly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. On the head A are pivoted legs B adapted to be spread outward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and to be secured in this spread position by hooks G hung on the lower end of the extension A and engaging pinsD in the said legs, so as to lock the latter in a spread position.
On the upper end of the post A, and on opposite sides thereof, are pivoted the leaves E, each having its outer end slightly beveled, to engage a corresponding bevel or shoulder A on the side of the post A when the said leaf is folded. The outer end of each leaf E is pivotally connected with a brace F, formed at its inner end with a notch F adapted to engage apin G secured in a recess in the post A, as indicated in the broken out portion of Fig. 1. It will be seen that when the braces F are hookedon the pins G they support the table leaves E in a horizontal position. The braces F are adapted to fold into correspondingly-shaped recesses E formed on the sides of the leaves E, so that when the latter are to be folded on the sides'of the post A, the braces rest in the recesses E.
As illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the post is made adjustable, and for this purpose is composed of two extension parts H and H, fitted to slide at one end in bearings I and J, of
which the bearing I is secured to the extensionH and the bearing J is pivoted on the other extension H, and is adapted to engage notches H formed in one side of the exten sion H, to securely .lock the latter in any desired position. On the other end of the extension H are arranged the table leaves and braces. for supporting the same in a horizontal position, similar to those previously described. On the lower end of the extension H are pivoted the legs, also of the construction previously described.
- It will be seen that this piece of folding furniture is very simple in construction, can be readily set up or knocked down, and is more especially designed for use in hotels or stores as exhibition stands, or for other purposes, it being understood that two of such devices as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 are set up and connected with each other at their table leaves by cross boards forming the real table top. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with the vertical post having its opposite sides cut away forming inclined shoulders A of the leaves E E pivoted at their upper ends to the upper end of the post in the cut away portions beveled at their outer or lower ends to abut against said shoulders and having recesses E in their inner edges, and braces pivoted at their outer ends in said leaf recesses, to fold therein, and adapted at their free ends to bear against the post and support the leaves extended, the leaves when folded being flush with the exterior of the post, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the post A having a reduced extension at its lower end and cut away at its opposite sides thereabove to form beveled shoulders A legs hinged to the post to fold around said extension flush with the outer face of the post, leaves E E hinged to the upper end of the post and beveled at their free ends to fold into the cut away portions flush with the exterior of the post, braces F hinged to the leaves to fold within recesses E in the inner edges of the leaves, the post having sockets G for the inner ends of the braces F and braces O pivoted to the exten-
