SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,094, dated January 29, 1895. Application filed January 19,1891. Renewed June 28, 1894- Serial No. 516,022- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES B. STANWOOD, a
citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Oincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Gear for Steam-Em gines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steam engines of theclass employing two cylinders and oper-' ating cranks set at or approximately at right angles. In such engines it has been customary to employ separate valve-operating connections each operated by a separate eccentric; and. my invention is an improvement upon engines of this description; and consists of a construction and arrangement of the valve-operating mechanism whereby the distributing valves are driven from the same eccentric. The eccentric-yoke, F, is connected in the usual manner bya connecting rod, r, directly to the valve rod, D, its connection with the other valve rod, D, being through intervening mechanism as follows: The eccentric yoke, F, is pivotally connected at a point about forty five degrees (corresponding with the crank positions) distant from its connection with the rod, 1', by a link, Z, with a crank arm, a, secured upon the rock shaft, b, which is extended in bearings across the frame or bed of, the engine to carry a corresponding crank arm, 0, in proper relations with a con necting rod, 0, extending to and operating the valve rod, 1''. The crank arms, a, 0, constitute, with their rock-shaft, b, a be1l-crank by which the vertical motion of the eccentric yoke, F, is translated into a horizontal reciprocation of the second valve rod, 1''.
It will be understood that the connections for the bell-crank with the yoke are to be taken on the yoke at points corresponding with the radial angle separating the cranks, and that the bell-crank is to be formed to a tive action will affect both valve movements alike; also any increase or diminution of the radius of eccentricity of the eccentric will affect both valve-movements alike.
Many incidental advantages are to be realized from the invention, such as lessened expense of construction, and maintenance; facility in adjusting the valve movements by adjusting one eccentric; and the facility for introducing governor mechanism and reversing appliances by havingto deal with but one valve mover.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a steam engine having two parallel cylinders and driving connections to cranks set at right angles upon a common shaft, a single eccentric upon the shaft; a valve rod from one of the distributing valves connecting directly with the eccentric strap; a valve rod from the other distributing valve; a bell crank pivoted to the engine frame and connecting at one end directly to the second valve rod; and at the other to the said eccentric strap by means of a link, substantially as set forth.
2. In a two-cylinder engine operating a common shaft by means of cranks set at or approximately at right angles upon a common shaft, a distribution valve for each cylinder; a single adjustable eccentric upon the shaft; driving connections between each distribution valve and said eccentric; and a centrifugal governor upon the shaft controlling the position of said eccentric, substantially as set forth.
3. In a steam engine of the type described, having two parallel cylinders, driving cranks set at right angles and distribution valves arranged between the cylinders; a single valvernoving eccentric on the shaft; parallel valve rods extending toward the shaft; a strap upon the eccentric connecting by means of a yoke rigidly and directly to one of said valve rods; a bell crank pivoted to the frame, so as to project one free arm in front of the eccentric and connect directly with the second valve rod and the other beneath the eccentric and 20 JAMES B.
